Buying a previously cat D bike

Featured Replies

Went to look at a 56 plate CB600 hornet other day as a first big bike,

In all fairness the bike was spotless but when i had another read of advert when i got home it says it was a cat D in 2011 but had been repaired by a previous owner,

I was all set to buy said bike but sort of been put off,

Whats peoples opinions on this???

Hmm, depends what is was cat d for. Could be purely cosmetic.

If it was anything frame wise leave well alone.

Should be cosmetic if its just a cat D

Anythin structural would be higher up the scale.

I'm fairly sure (at least if its the same as cars) the category depends on what the repair would have cost vs the value of the bike.

A bike could have had a fairly heavy hit at 1 year old and had forks, fairing, headlight etc because it was worth a big chunk at that age. Alternatively a bike could have a light drop at 10 years old and a single bit of fairing and paint could write it off.

At 5 years old a hornet would be worth how much? £3000 maybe? So it'll have needed £1000 to £1500 worth of work I reckon.

I'd consider a bike that had been written off BUT firstly I'd want photos of it before being repaired so I could see exactly what was done to it, and secondly it depends on the bike. Honda Hornets are 10 a penny so tbh with plenty of choice I'd move on to another.

Once a Cat D then always a Cat D.

It may be fine. It may be cheap. It will be a Cat D when you come to sell it though.

Looking at others its not particularly cheap compared to others,

Off to look at some more over weekend but i think ive almost talked myself out of it

If its not cheap then dont do it mate.

Itd have to be really cheap for it to be worthwhile imo.

Theres a Cat D VFR on ebay too. Thats only a few hundred quid cheaper than it should be. Dno why. Should be much cheaper id say.

You buy on condition etc, and just because it was deemed by an insurance assessor 5 years ago as an uneconomic repair it can have been cared for a serviced and looked after and be worth as much as some vehicle that was never crashed or stolen recovered / damaged.

Has it been on the road all the time since 2011 and been through 4 MOTs and looks and rides like it should?

Then that can mean it may well be a good buy if you are looking for a keeper and not something you think

you can make a profit on.

Many bikes are crash damaged and the insurance never informed because no claim is made, so repaired and never show as Cat C or D,

and you might end up buying one of those.

If it was Cat D some time ago and has done a decent amount of miles since it happened then the repairs must have been good and I would consider one so long as it was priced accordingly.

Do you fancy a 2006 CBR1100XX? Mine will be up for sale very soon.

OEM plastics and tanks are seriously expensive, a low speed slide whilst causing no mechanical or structural damage can easily run to 1-2k dependant on bike.

I'd be more wary of streetfighters because if you want a naked bike you buy a naked bike. Fighters tend to be fully faired then involved in an accident but not recorded.

Yeah they did,

Would have liked a blue one but not many about this colour that are tidy as they seem to have an awful habit of fading,

There is a couple of bits that need doing but nothing that i carn't sort,

Just need to sell my little YBR now else ill be living on baked beans for next couple of months

Nice choice. Good piece of kit. I like the colour too.

Hope you enjoy it.

Ride safe

Very good colour. I had a yellow Hornet (from 99 I think) which was a very nice bike. Typical Honda reliability and build quality too.
