Best way to completely flush power steering?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Long story short, I wan't to completely bleed my power steering.

What is the best way to completely flush the power steering fluid to remove all dirt that may have got inside?

I'm thinking about removing the return line and turn the steering completely to both sides multiple times with engine turned off. I have 2l of oil here.

Thank you!

The power steering only works with the engine running though, not sure you would achieve anything doing what you suggest?

I would syphon out all the fluid from the reservoir, fill with fresh fluid, run the car and turn the steering lock to lock a few times, syphon out the fluid again and refill with fresh.

Already did that, I was wondering if there is best way, because that way some dirt may stay in the bottom.

I'm talking about raising the front wheels so the steering can be turned freely and then turn it full lock both sides

But the pump won't be running,so I don't think you will force any fluid out.

You will just be moving the rack.

I think it will force fluid out.

I don't have a Fabia manual, but the one I do have on my desk explicitly states that you bleed the rack by turning the steering lock to lock several times with the engine off.

That's to bleed air out of it after dismantling.

Well, after refilling actually. It doesn't give a drain procedure.

So if to take the air out it's with the engine off it's because the fluid moves....

Yeah refilling is what I meant.

my idea is remove all the oil from the pump, put new oil, remove return hose, keep turning the steering and refilling until the 2l are gone.

You might empty rack like that, but I can't see it pulling fluid through the pump?

If you want to drain it, just take all the pipes off and go lock to lock a few times.

That should push fluid out of the rack and gravity will drain it from the reservoir, so should be nice and easy really.

So where's the 'dirt' going to come from? It's a sealed system.
