1.9 tdi No Boost

Featured Replies

Hi all, my friend recently bought a mk1 octy 1.9 tdi (AXR), but it now has a boosting fault.

Drove it myself and it drives fine apart from having no boost atall

Revs fine (just slow), no management light on (you would think it was just a non turbo diesel)

When accelerating there is no air charging (whhsh) noise and no sign of the turbo charging atall

Read quite a lot of posts about this online and I have checked for split or loose pipes and I unplugged the MAF and it made no difference.

I read about boost control modules on the bulkhead but there are 2 both with the same part number  except on has a 'b' at the end so I dont know which to replace for him. Also read about stick turbo vains etc. I would like to try everything possible first before removing the turbo.

Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated, Cheers

scanning with VCDS to check for codes should always be the first step, this could point you in the right direction before you start fault finding on it. Its temping to start blaming things and replacing parts but you can waste a lot of money doing it that way

Thanks for that, sorry I should have said that we scanned it and no codes are logged, the management light is also not on. Thanks

That's a PD engine isn't it?

Also did you scan it with VCDS another another generic code reader?

Think you can do the Mr muscle clean without removing the turbo. Think there's a post in the Fabia section.

When did it last have the timing belt changed?

Yes its the 1.9 tdi PD  (AXR) engine. Timing belt is not due for another 25,000 miles. I used both vag com and my Lauch CRP 129 to scan it and no codes are logged. Thanks

I would do some logs with VCDS then, first off actual and requested boost. Also check the timing with VCDS.

Have you checked the turbo actuator? I just upgraded my turbo, and the old actuator was shot which gave me all sorts of limp mode issues and what not. It's very, very hard to get to whilst the turbo is still on the car, but is possible. Maybe logging requested vs actual boost would help identify if this was the case. I believe some people have luck with spraying some sort of heavy duty cleaner (caustic cleaner maybe?) onto the mechanism, moving it a bit then cleaning off. Can't say for certain there though.
