What to try next

Featured Replies

After washing and polishing my car yesterday I noticed my summer tyres (GY Asy 2s) are getting low and need replacing very shortly. They have lasted well. 18 months (1 summer on front, 2 winters on rear.) and have no real complaints apart from they, like previous Goodyears (GSD3s) were horrible in icy/frosty conditions.

In the 10 years of having the car, I've had:

Goodyear GSD2s (came with car).

GSD3s

Toyo T1-Rs

Uniroyal Rainsport 2s (one of best I've had)

Rainsport 3s (Probably worst as only lasted 6 months)

Goodyear Asymmetric 2s

I am tempted to try Continentals next as I've currently running their winters (T850s), however for my size (205/45 16) only the Contisport 2s or Eco 5s are available which I believe are an old design.

Any suggestions?

I've got Avon ZV5's on the Ibiza. Little bit noisy, but great performance.

RSR's :p

What about the new Goodyear asymmetric 3's? Or the Pilotsport 4's.

Can't get them in my size (yet). I could get Assy 3's if I had a Mk2 Fab (17s) but not for the Mk1 (16s).

I have wondered about Pilotsport 3s, but at over £80 each they are a little too expensive. I'd prefer to buy a pair for £150 or less.

Yeah sorry Jim I realised after I posted.

Such a shame as I'm in a similar position as you and was looking for some replacements for the RS3's.

How about these Jim they are rated pretty good also quite cheap.http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Nexen/N-Fera-SU1.htm

RSR's :p

What are RSR's??

OP

I have Uniroyals RainSport 3 and as you say they dont last long at all but for the price and grip I think they are superb....

I've heard good things from people on here about them, I know you rave about them. However, am I right in saying they are track day tyres so although brilliant in the dry, I'm not confident about coping in the wet, especially only being 'E' Rated. To gain this great dry grip, I guess they'll be very soft so won't last long.

Just spotted this on my-tyres.

Even DOT approved or E-Mark approved Federal competition tyres are designed and compounded for competition use only and are not intended for highway or road use.

wet grip is on a par with most mid-range tyres, toyo, maxxis, etc...

still road legal :p the E-mark is the legal bit ;)

I do rave about them, but they are certainly not for everyone..... the large tread blocks mean they are noisy.... you could even be forgiven for thinking you have a wheel bearing going sometimes..... but this is the same with all track day tyres...... I just like them for the unrivaled grip in the dry, and surprisingly good grip in the wet! Plus I use winters in winter (where these simply wouldn't work)

you would probably be better off with something like the michelin PS3 for everyday road use ;)

What did you end up getting Jim H ?

I am in the same boat now as need tyres for my Fabia VRS and not sure what to try this time, I've always used RS2 but last time had to go for RS3, I have got 15,000 out of them (rotating them and tracking spot on) were as the RS2 would do around 24,000.

Nothing really catching my eye when looking on the tyre web sites so may be stuck with RS3 again!

With lots of deliberation I could not make my mind up. I ended up buying another pair of Asymetric 2s. Good grip and good for wear. If I can remember they were £130 for the pair from Camskil and a tenner each to fit, can't grumble.

I didn't want RS3 again as for me they only lasted the summer (8k miles). I preferred the old RS2s.

Thanks for the info Jim, I also prefer the RS2 and was very disappointed when I found they were discontinued!

Are the Asymetric 2's on par with the RS2/RS3? they seem to be the only other choice for an all rounder at a similar price to the RS3.

Thanks
