Insurance query (NCB entitlement)

Featured Replies

Having been with Direct Line for some time I've accumulated 7 years NCB - all bar one were with them.

Now, I've moved to Admiral and they have asked for proof of the 7 yrs NCB (as you would expect).

Direct Line have written a nice letter stating that I have "5 years (maximum) no claims bonus"

Obviously 5 years doesn't equal 7 years. Before I go and send the letter off to Admiral, is this likely to be a problem? Or will Direct Line's uses of the word "maximum" get me out of it?

I may be wrong but 5 years is the Max.................you will only 7 years with if you stop with Direct Line........Move and you will only get 5....................I Think:confused: It's an incentive to keep you with direct line

Not being an expert I think the you can only normally get 5 years NCB, the extra years of no claims depending on the insurer is insurer specific.

I am sure someone else will pop along with a much more betailed explanation, but I though I would post something especially as it gets me past the 1000 posts :)

Hmmm.... I did think it was strange when some web sites gave the choice of only 5+ yet others went higher. The Admiral site gave the choice of 7 yrs so I chose that option :( I'll have to call them later I guess.

it may be worth just telling them that you have got 7 years NCB with Direct line especially as any claims {fault} will be shown on your current policy and this may help sway them in your favour, as you can produce the document shouwing no problems in the last five years & if they want to they could just give them a ring? maybe, just a thought.

If you still have the renewal from direct line try sending that as it will say max but not give the figure so they might take your word on the number of years

Or record a telephone call to Direct Line asking how many years no claims you have, and play it back to Admiral.

Surely thats a non-starter as I'd have to prove I was actually speaking to direct line and not my missus ;)

Could be worse, a friend of mine bought a car with 3 yrs free insurance because 1st time car insurance is so expensive and he wanted to buy a new car anyway. 3 years later he went to change companies because the company that did the free insurance had given a really high quote. He found he only had 1 year NCB not 3 if he decided to change insurer. It was written into the small print.

but at least he could argue the point if he had not had any claims, most companies would probably give the 3 years NCB to get a new customer, how about haveing a recently passed new driver who has 2 years NCB as they were insured as a provisional driver on there own car, then try filling in some of the online forms which keep erroring as you cannot have held a full licence for under 1year but have 2 years NCB, I gave up and phoned around LOL.
