siezing rear calipers?

Featured Replies

just had my vRS in for its first service and rear brakes were grinding loudly at slow speeds when braking. Had it in for this before and was told by dealer that rear pads were glazed and was charged

I swapped my wheels over last weekend and checked the brakes - all the edges were rusted so i cleaned them with a wire brush (edges) and sprayed everything else with brake cleaner

BTW - i took a previous car to Kwik-Fit for a free safety check, they stripped the brakes, cleaned everything, coppergreased them and refitted - still FREE :)

Hmmm, my rear brakes are a bit noisy too, even a friend who's not interested in cars pointed it out the other day.

I put it down to salty roads causing rusty discs and the relative lack of use the rear brakes get.

my rear brakes have made a slight grinding noise since the day i bought it. they work so i never got too worried about it.

I had a problem about 4 months ago with a what the dealer refered to as a "stripped" rear disc. He thought it was a manufacturing defect and it was replaced free of charge. Wheather or not he was right time will only tell....

the way to cure seizing grinding ect, is to drive it hard for a while! drivin gently the rear brakes do almost nothiing! (I think it's 30% of the braking below 40 mph) not surprised they seize and grind! but hammer it from a 60mph stretch to a roundabout a few time to make 'em work and clean off the crap!

18,000 miles so far, no brake problems.......

drove my old cavalier exactly the same way as i drive my fabia and the rear discs never made any noise. in fact none of the cars i`ve owned have made anywhere near the amount of noise i got from the rear brakes of this car.

Not just the vRS I'm afraid.

My Combi's doing it too in this weather. So much moisture and salt around that the rust doesn't have chance to clear off the discs. They cleaned the brakes at service but that only lasted a while.

Roll on warmer weather.....

BTW could pulling the handbrake on a bit while driving help clean the discs?

Apparently my rear calipers are seized too. Brakes still work mind and I'll get them done on MOT.
