At my wits end- loss of power

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 2008 skoda octavia 1.6 fsi petrol with 78k on the clock.

There just seems to be no power anymore as if you are in a higher gear which results driving uphill a real struggle and on a straight no zip. it initially started this year.

Jan 2016 engine light came on ( no loss of power) - mechanic came plugged in laptop it was bank 2 lambda .He cleared the code

Early March engine light came back on ( no loss of power) - mechanic came with bank 2 lambda as we both was thinking same fault but this time code read bank 1 and nowhere had stock so i ordered from eurocarparts and await for stock from them , he cleared the code.

Mid march car was starting to  lose power so with mot due end of march I booked in it with the same mechanic with a full service , this was done and passed with no fault codes but the power loss was still there , he reckoned lambda might sort it or otherwise he would try to clean the EGR but said the car would be running rougher if that was the fault.

Today I fitted the Bosch bank 1 lambda sensor with no fault codes and I have still the same issue and now I'm at my wits end on how to remedy the car.

I have always used high octane fuel and I drive steady , all I can think of next is change the fuel filter as this was not in the service or re-fill the tank with shell petrol as the last re-fill was at Texaco also car seems to rev ok.

There are only bank 1 probes, no bank 2 so that's a little confusing.

If there are no other fault codes I'd certainly start with checking fuel pressure. If the HPFP isn't delivering pressure this will certainly effect performance and could cause lambda probe faults.

+1 with Tech1e as i also run an 05 1.6FSI.

Ay 78k miles, the HPFP cam follower may worn through.

Changing the fuel filter is a good idea, particularly if you are getting the hesitation most noticeably when you accelerate.  It's a cheap option, and you've nothing to lose, and maybe a lot to gain, by doing it.

Octane rating is not a measure of fuel quality, just a measure of resistance to pre-detonation.  Try 95 RON for a change.  It's quicker to ignite than 98.  Again, nothing to lose.

Thanks for your replies and I forwarded them to the mechanic. Turned out it was the cat pipe that was kaput.

Cat pipe, gasket and extension pipe.

£160 fitted
