Wing Mirror (vandals!) advice please

Featured Replies

Hi, my first post- and already seeking some advice / thoughts from you nice people. So basically some not nice person or people went down my street last night and kicked / battered off a number of wing mirrors (my octavia and vw T4 being amongst them.) Phoned it through to the police, they were very understanding / sympathetic (several other cars were done last weekend as well) but theres no cctv / witnesses to the crime. All the cars done were near side / pavement side mirrors.

Anyway with ref to the octavia (mk3 elegance) the whole lot was smashed off inccluding the the metal triangle part that fits it to the car wires all broken presumably dangling inside the door. Debating going through insurance or trying to sort it myself: couple of questions please- any idea what it could cost to buy and have fitted? - heated, auto folding mirrors. Are they really hard to fit if I have a go myself? I live in Cornwall so if you've any recommendations in Devon or Cornwall on who to go to that would be appreciated. Thanks for your thoughts Wayne

..............My apologies I also posted this under technical guides which I think was the wrong place so if a mod could delete that one please.

All the mirrors I've ever replaced have just been screwed/bolted on from inside. Just requires the door card off and then the small triangular bit in the corner. The hard bit is finding a mirror in the correct colour at a good price.

Thanks, been looking on line, finding a used mk3 one at a fair price doesnt look easy - are there any other compatable (VAG cars) which a mirror could come off to pop straight in / connect to keep me going?

I'm sure you can get non OEM ones cheaper. My other half smashed both sides on her Polo during a short space of time, they were not colour coded just plastic ones which made it easier as i didn't have to paint them but I think they were £40 each for the complete unit, heated and electrically adjustable (not power folding). Just the mirror glass cost more than that at the VW dealer so I was quite impressed.

If you say the metal parts are damaged there is really no other solution than to get the whole lot. If it was just parts of the mirror, the cover or mechanism you could jut buy a donor mirror and swap all the bits over.

Thanks, sadly it is the whole lot I'll need: I will call GFS tomorrow to ask if they can supply OEM and keep an eye out as well for the time being for anything that fits (manual or electric) or if I can find out if any other models have the same fittings it could be easier to sort.

Whoever the scrotes are that did this must have caused a lot of expensive damage and hastle: neighbour reckons about 12 cars have been done over last 2 weekends and they've gained nothing from their crime.

I had my drivers wing mirror broken on holiday when an idiot came over a rise over the white line. The glass itself from VW (heated and dimming) was £265! I would go through insurance

no had experience of a mk3, but changed mirrors on other cars incl my mk2 - pretty straighforward job to do - just plugs in, bolts from the inside..  if its less than 300 (as per above) i'd be doing it myself rather than involve insurance co / lose no claims etc.  your excess is prob going to be a couple of hundred anyway?
