Air con issues

Featured Replies

Hi all I wondering if somebody can help.

I've got a pre fl vrs tdi and my air con is acting weird.

It normally always takes about 5 mins for the air con to really get cold but it seems to cut out get warm then go cold again, I've just had it regassed and it filled up fine with no issues.

Has anybody got any idea why it may be doing this ?? Also there is no fault codes

Thanks in advance

What was the outside temp when this happened?

About 14 but it does it all the time

Sounds more like a temp flap issue in the car if it's going hot then cold.

How would I find out about fixing that ? As it takes a while for the air con to get cold even when just turning car on?

It doesn't go red hot it's cold but not freezing as it would if air on running

How often does it take to go from cold to not so cold? Have you looked at the air con compressor to see if the clutch is engaging/disengaging at the same frequency as the change in air temp?

It's like when u slow down etc but the pipes in engine bay are ice cold. From what I understand there is no clutch on it ? I think it's like a electro magnet type of thing ?

I did wonder if they still used the clutch on the pre-FL but maybe all of the MKII uses the more modern de-loader type arrangement

I would want to have a look at the measuring blocks with VCDS, that way you can see the flap positions, temperatures and see what the controller is telling the compressor to do. Otherwise its just guess work.

There's a guy near who has vcds near me who I could ask to scan etc, what am I looking for or would it be good to post it ?

I'd try running the flap basic setting sequence with VCDS first.

Then I would have a look in the value measure blocks and see what the compressor status is.

Any experts ??

IIRC 0.82 amps means the compressor isn't doing anything.

What valve is that ? Is it easy to change ?

More info here:

You need first to find what type of compressor you have and after that to search the valve.

You need to get out all the gas from the AC system and then you can replace the valve.

Getting all the gas out of the system will require a visit to somewhere with an AC machine.

If I can get a conpressor cheap enough it may be better to change the whole thing no ? My mate who gassed it said he will fit etc for £35 inc regassing it ?
