Featured Replies

Getting through my little jobs on my 04 vrs, but keeping piling up, lol. Today my boot won't unlock. the only way to open it is to go inside the boot and and unlock it manually.

Anyone got any idea's ?

Cheers..

Are your interiour lights working? The boot switch operates on the same fuse.

yeah, i think so, i know the boot lights still workin.

is the mechanism making the unlock noise at least? or is the switch just dead clicking

I had a similar problem and found that bizarrely the boot would open if I opened the rear driver's side passenger door first!  I kid you not - I discovered this when trying to get things out of the boot.  The problem then disappeared for a while but would occasionally reoccur.  Recently both doors havbe been OK and al I did was spray WD40 down into the locking mechanism (on one of those random occasions it would actualy opened).

That is caused by an intermittently failing microswitch inside the driver's door lock unit (extremely common fault on a lot of VAG group models). A failed microswitch on the drivers door does not tell the car that the drivers door has been opened, and therefore the boot finger switch remains inoperable unless you first open any other door with a normally functioning microswitch. The driver's door microswitch nearly always fails first as it obviously gets the most use. The design of the way the latch rubs horizontally on the microswitch instead of merely pressing it is very poor as it eventually wears the plastic switch plunger away and sometimes causes the internal plastic parts to break.

Part numbers for the microswitches are...

Front right 3BD998786

Front left 3BD998785

You can get them on ebay. If you fit one you need to cut the wires from the old switch and join the new switch wires to them.

Or you can buy a whole new lock unit complete with switch. They are expensive for a genuine one and pattern ones don't always work properly.

Other symptoms of a failed/failing microswitch are...

Interior light does not operate when opening drivers door.

Lights-on warning bleep does not work when lights are on and drivers door is opened.

Car re-locks itself after 20-30 seconds of unlocking even with drivers door open (unless another door is first opened or key inserted into the ignition before 20-30 seconds have elapsed).

Obviously these symptoms can also be intermittent.

The switch is clipped to the drivers door lock unit inside the door.

In your case it might not be the microswitch unless your boot opens after opening another door other than the driver's.
