Changing VRS handbrake cable

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Im prepping myself to replace the offside handbrake cable if need be. It may be stretched, so even after all my caliper/disc/pad replacements, i may still have a rear braking issue :(

Is it a very difficult job? I consulted the workshop manual online and it made it seem rather simple..........but so is changing calipers and my bleeding hands, sore back and significantly lightened wallet can testify it wasnt.

I dont want to start a job, find out its way above my paygrade and then be in a screwed position......

Also the manual mentions replacing a cable retaining clip on the chassis.........anyone know the part number?

thanks again

Piece of cake, takes a few minutes.

So remove faring round handbrake, slacken off nut and unhook cable, unhook at brake end (including removing this notorious clip) and pull cable out. Then just do it in reverse to fit the new one?

No specific nasties to watch out for?

Its easier if you slacken the cable off on the inside by winding the adjustment off most of the way with the 10mm/13mm nut on the threaded bar inside the car.

im sure the cable pushes into a few hooks under the car so they easily pull out and unhook it off the caliper, just a flat screwdriver to pull the metal clip off but try and keep it in nice shape to refit.

its also easier if you can force the handbrake leaver on by hand when hooking the cable in if its a tight fit.

When released at both ends I have heard that the cable outer can be difficult to remove/change if it has seized in whatever channel it passes through into the car. |Anyone care to comment ? Need to change one myself once the weather improves - may be waiting a while, I know.

Never had an issue, they can be tight just just knock the cable out of the tube.

Simple enough job if your useful with your paws! Not being cheeky but if you can't replace a brake caliper then leave the cable to someone who knows how :)
