Problem with sensors front and back.

Featured Replies

When I bought my Octy DSG  Est in mid 2012 I had front sensors fitted as  an extra. (amongst other extras). Seemed to work OK though. Had them fitted as useless at parking!!

After about 6 months after driving through fairly heavy rain on the M3 I pulled up at shop head on, the front indicators came on. As they should! When I pulled away the sensors were showing something in front. As I was about 4m away from anything I thought something was wrong Took it to local squealer. They checked it and said it was OK. 3 months down the line it happened again! Took it back, this time the said they had sprayed the front and under bumper with water from a hose pipe. I commented that at the rate water came up under the bumper when  driving on a motorway they should have used a power hose! no comment but they did replace all the front sensors as well as having the visible bits colour coded to the paint colour.

Around a year later it happened about half mile  from the squealers. Took it in and said come and have a look they said book it in and we will have another look? So same thing happened again. This time complained to Skoda UK. made notes and Naff all happened. When it happened again took it back to garage they checked it again then showed me a piece of paper which said it was  known fault!! WTF !!

A few months later It happened yet again. This time I got out or the car and videoed it happening from in and outside of the car. Gave clip to local garage to send to SKUk. Nothing!

It happened again and I filmed it as it happened with it firing off when cars were passing about 4m away and it kept going as well with nothing there.

So back to garage whose chief Tech took control and sent 33mb clip to SKUk again. Nothing yet although he has been at SKUk people for the last 3 weeks. Nothing again. Chief tech said it could be the control box  but would wait for SKU to act????

Anyone else had this and know what the cure is?

Not sure if it's the same but my Octy 2's front sensors used to have a Wendy on after it had rained. Once they'd dried out they were fine again. But irritating but it wasn't under warranty so I lived with it.

My rear seems to work fine but the front do the same as yours fairly consistently - chime and flash all over the place randomly and don't always correctly detect real obstacles.

Dealer looked, re-calibrated it (suggested they were actually picking up the ground in front of the car) and said that they tested Ok, but weren't 100% sure they had fixed it so I needed to monitor.

Lo and behold, the same day it was back to its usual tricks and continues to be flakey. I have just taken some video footage for them to send to Skoda NZ ahead of my next planned visit, so will see what they come back with.

Ahhh the phatom menace.......my mk2FL did this and so does the mk3.

Normally worse in the colder months.

If it was "hosing" water into the sensor then surely the rears would also do this.

Apparently not as I checked at the time!!

Keep on at them they might !! give up in the end and do something!!

Glad it's not jus me.

My fronts also sporadically alert but only in slow moving traffic, car in front at least 10ft away and sensors act like 10 inches away. Occasionally I have thought they should sense the car in front being too close but have not picked it up. Weather does not seem to be a feature in my case.

I think I will be taking the car to the local dealers for a bit of advice, car is only 3 months old

Rears never seem to be a problem.

I think that any one with this fault needs to hammer SKU to get them to find an answer to the problem, which in some conditions could lead to an accident! I blame SKU for a problem I had with mine!

Pulled into a car park as advised by person I was visiting. Pulled in to this fairly tight car park. No parking available ! As I pulled forward the front sensors went off. I then went to reverse out the fronts were still bleeping. Problem was that the rear sensors had the same tone as the fronts?? Not usually though. As I was used to this happening I carried on reversing. Mirrors showed nothing at the rear. Carried on, I was moving slowly. Next crunch, I had backed into a  a very low wall, most of which had been knocked down by someone else.

Needed a new rear bumper £850 fitted!! Not nice. Looking to SKU for some recompense!!! Still might as well try???

Spoke to local dealers to-day.

Their chief tech. who is dealing with my sensor problems with SKU.

SKU want my car in for 2 days! They intend linking it up with SKU Hq. I told him it only happens on mine when it has been raining. He is a good guy and seems very genuine.

He said if SKU don't solve it he is going to fit a new control anyway and see if this cures it? This is the only thing they haven't tried yet!!!

I honestly don't pin much faith on them solving this problem but it's worth a shot!!

Anyone with a problem like this needs to hammer SKU or the local squealer. When i bought mine from new I took out 5 years warranty so may have a bit more leverage.

The only other leaverage I have with SKU is this is the second new Octy estate I have owned from new. I have a good record with VW group as 2 beetles one new

New Caddy van. and a Porsche Boxter plus the 2 Skodas . We shall see!

Will keep you all posted on any new developments!!

So update from the dealer; they sent my video to Skoda NZ who have approved/advised replacing the parking sensor controller. Booked in next week!

Well it is only a month or so old - I would be disappointed with any less of a response!

Well they have been over 2 years with mine! Still seem to be getting somewhere now, hopefully. Tried phoning but tech is away today!!

I had something similar with mine. Many false alarms sometimes with nothing in front of me. I also managed to shoot a video of it with nothing in front of me.

VCDS showed an error from the rear loudspeaker, so that was changed. No effect at all, it still had the problem. Second attempt was to straighten my front license plate which had gotten slightly bend after close encounter with a towball. According to the dealer the front sensors are so sensitive that a vibrating licence plate could trigger them. But that didn't solved the problem too. Third time they replaced the wiring from the sensors to the control unit, and that solved the problem. What led them to this was that my car had a small problem with a clicking sound from the clutch pedal when it was only a few weeks old. Some nylon bushing was bad and got replaced. But that small repair more than two years ago was in the same area as where the wiring to the sensor's control unit is located, so they had a look at the wiring. Even though they said there was no visible damage to the wiring, the wire were touched by moving parts from the pedalbox, making it somehow damaged in the inside. So when I drove the car and used the clutch pedal, or more specifically when I was at a stop with the clutch pedal engaged the front sensors would sometimes be triggered when I disengaged the clutch because of pressure to the wiring.

Now it works, but false alarms can still occur in traffic. If there is a bus or a truck next to me at a red light, the vibrations from their exhausts can sometimes trigger it, and so can ice and snow at winter time.

Mine seem to play up when either stopped or very slow moving. I think I will be speaking to local dealer.

Considering I paid extra for the Front sensors and they seem to be the most problematic.

Phoned Local dealer for an update! originally the local tech was just going to change the control box but SUK are still asking for the car for 2 days to do a linkup with the onboard computer???

This should be good as it only happens in rainy conditions!!!!

Told the tech that in NZ they said straight away to change the control box.  They want the car in and are charging me £15 for a spare car!

Never mind, as long as they sort it!

The dealer did tell me that it is not uncommon for rain to give false readings on the sensors even when working properly - mine goes nutso regardless of the weather, so..!

Replacement done under warranty...seems good so far, but will see how we go tomorrow when I leave - always seemed to be worse in the mornings!

Update - looking all good so far!

Kudos to the dealer in Auckland for managing out my (minor so far) issues under warranty pretty quickly.

The service rep, who is a right Skoda man  told me they wanted the car for two days to do data transfer to Skoda!!

Took it in , got a phone call from the chief tech. to say the car was ready?? What happened to the 2 days. Just changed the control box he said!!

Havent had any serious rain since but all seems OK! So fairly happy!!!
