Mk1 octavia VRs or 1.9 TDI

Featured Replies

hello guys ...i drive a Skoda superb 2.5 tdi at present ..it has some issues and needs some sorting out ..while it is in repair i was planning on getting a secondary car for me to move on about ..i saw couple of cars between 2005-2008... I've been reading the pinned threads over here on what to check out on a car before buying and found it quite useful ...i kinda feel this thread is mostly for VRs owners  :D  .....

what i wanted to ask is that i am confused between going for a diesel 1.9 tdi ...and the VRs .... i drove both ..n i felt the power deliverance on both the car v different ! i loved the VRs more tho  :peek: .... i just wanted to know which is more easier to keep around with regards to upkeep, maintenance of engine and fuel economy..as i don't want the secondary car to be in trouble often like my superb...

sorry if this question has been asked before ...

Both the 1.9tdi and 1.8t are fairly bullet proof engines.

Obviously the diesel would give better mpg but the petrol will be a lot more fun.

At this age the vRS is more likely to have been enthusiast owned and serviced well whereas the 1.9 will likely be more of a workhorse car and skimped on (imho) but in either event go for history and condition over miles.

Which 1.9? There were PD and injection pump diesels in the mkI and they are quite different.

I have both mate, 2001 mk octavia vrs and a PD130 bora, I love them both for different reasons, the mpg on the bora is amazing and the speed and feel of the vrs is amazing, I'm trying to spend my time and cash on the vrs bur the pd is just asking to be touched lol,,

It realy depends on what your after in a car..

The pd130 isn't slow but it's not fast when compared to the vrs...

If you go for a 19tdi I whould stay away from the pd150's as alot have Benn ****ed about with and need clutches and fly wheels, if a vrs is what you go for make it a red one ;)

we have the 1.9 PD engines here as the only mk1 engine option....

ok i think i know what i want .... but just one small question hovering over my head .... which is more easier to maintain ? fuel economy wise for me anything above 10-12km/l is ok for me ....i am used to that kind of mileage on my superb 2.5 tdi ...

is the VRs easy on the pockets ? service wise ...? ..the only reason y i keep asking over and over again is i am currently facing much trouble maintaining my superb..its got ingress and absolutely no power ...(wont give up on her tho...she's going to go in for a full service (gulp) ..) i just don't want my secondary car to give me constant trouble....

saw another VRs today (yellow) ..the colour put me off tho ... i like the RED one i saw couple of days back ....just trying to fix my mind ...

most of the 1.9 TDI i saw here between 2005-2008 have a total mileage between 1,00,000 - 1,45,000. !! the VRs i saw two of them were barely run ...35,000km - 50,000km ! i had a smooth driving exp on the VRs..loved the power delivery in each gears and yeah MANUAL transmission was awesome...something my superb lacked....

i am leaning more towards the VRs as of now ...what do u guy think ?

Vrs definitely, if you drive it sensible you can get 45mpg out them, servis wise the spark plugs are a bit expensive but overall good motoring :)

Hermon - I missed that you're in India.

Be aware that most of the Indian vRS 'out of the box' tend to be mapped to 150bhp rather than the 180 we had in Europe. A remap will do the same as it does to ours, just for some reason they are slightly detuned for that market.

I can't comment on the PD engine as no experience, but certainly on the vRS servicing is less than average cost wise in my experience. Annual oil and filters etc tends to work out just over £100 in the main, cambelt service etc can be around £300 but not needed that often. Look at the history when you buy though - an annual (10k miles) service is a definite MUST in the history and something you need to keep up. The 1.8t is solid as a rock but has to have a 10k oil change at a minimum as they don't like old oil.

Most of the normal consumables tend to be fairly cheap tbh but not sure how easy to come by out there. Certainly maintenance costs on the 1.8t or the 1.9tdi will be a lot less than the 2.5tdi - my dad had a similar engine in one of his Audi's and even buying through tps seemed expensive.

The VRS 1.8T will set you back around 10.9L/100km which is around 9.1km/L (Weird how India uses km per litre) while the 1.9 TDI will give you 21.7km/L so you'd save double in fuel. It also depends on the type of drive you're doing as if you're only traveling short journeys then diesel isn't for you as it will just clog up your EGR (especially with the poor quality fuel you have) in which case I'd recommend the 1.8T Petrol VRS. However if it's long journeys then I'd go with the 1.9 TDI as you save so much on fuel that the matience is lower.

sound advice there. if you're driving a low speeds (under 80 km/h) and driving less than 30 minutes.. just get the vrs!

My diesel isn't happy at all being driven around town. I have to get it up to higher speeds to make it heat up enough and stop the sticky vane issue from happening.
