The CD changer is dead!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I thought I'd ask since I've had a lot of useful help already from this forum

My CD changer in my 2001 Octavia estate is apparently dead. At least, when I press eject the button nothing at all happens. So I removed it and looked underneath and there was a load of water sitting around the two (or three?) electrical multi-connectors. I dried this all out with cloths then thoroughly hair driered the area until it was nice and dry. Tried again, nothing. I tried to unclip / pull the connectors closer to me but they appear to be glued or riveted down. I can see some copper rot where the wires go in so I sprayed it all with contact cleaner and left it, but that didn't help. At least now it's all dry. I thought it might be something to do with the fact that the boot lights don't work when I open the boot.

Has anyone got any suggestions please?? I'd really appreciate it if anyone else has got an idea.

Water would be from the washer pipe to the boot lid - there is a joint in the middle of all of the wiring right next to the CD changer which has probably been leaking for a while and shorted a few bits

Common problem unfortunately. The rear screen wash pipe runs through that area and theres a connector that often fails causing water to end up under the changer. I binned mine and got a new HU that has iPod hookup instead.

Problem is the main boot loom runs through the same place. You may get dead changer, no boot lights, and the car may not see the boot as 'open' and therefore lock when your loading stuff in.

Only fix I found was to dry it all out, find all the corroded wiring and redo it. There's some connector blocks along there which is where it all goes wrong.

Good news is I got an auto electrician to sort for about £40 - depending on how you are with wiring could just cost you the price of some solder.

As the other guys say above.

Ok thanks for the pointers, I'm not too bad at wiring but not confident soldering. If I could get those multi connectors up I might be able to have a look at them, mind. does anyone know how to unseat them from where they're held down?

I am not sure if the estate is the same as hatch but mine has 2 screws either side just slacken them off and then it on a bracket u should be able to pull off ea27d6441e989bc6a13588c648042b29.jpg5de6b8b0cb0e3b486fbdf5b8aa19de13.jpg

Get in touch if you need a replacement CD changer :)  I have a couple.  If the wiring to the changer is bad, I can also provide plugs/wiring :)

I got the changer out ok, thanks! but underneath there are some multi-connectors that I'm not sure how to remove :s. and thank you devonutopia, i'm fairly sure the CD changer should be ok but I think the wiring is shot, I need to get a proper look at it

So, I managed to unfasten the connectors (they were just held in by a pressure clip) with the help of the 'Not Giving up After 5 Minutes' method and open them, fiddly buggers. They were all corroded and green inside but happily I think a bit of electrical contact spray should clean them right up! There was also one of those 'nodes' which was all green and nasty, I'll redo that with some heatshrink at the weekend. I also properly reconnected the rear wash pipe, it snapped together with a satisfying click :) I'll see if some Soudal fixes that wiring and hopefully restores boot lighting and CD changer functionality
