Faulty Meguiars G220v v2

Featured Replies

As per the title my megs DA polisher has packed up.on only its second use. I bought it 2 1/2 years ago after the sage's on here recommended it and gave the VRs a detailing along with Chris when I went up to see him at the time. Time has moved on and the VRs could do with another going over now as it's picked up a few minor scratches that I'd like to get rid of. Being a bit nervous of attacking the Octy I decided to have a go at SWMBO's Seat Altea as we are going to sell that shortly and it seemed an ideal opportunity to practice using the DA again. After cleaning and prepping the Seat I got out the G220 only for it to start playing up straight away- it pulses when not under load and when applied to the paintwork it then stops altogether. Being's its only the second time I've used it I'm nt impressed as you might  expect. I bought it from Amazon and have contacted Meguiars via their website to see what they say but if they don't help I will need a replacement.

So for an inexperienced amateur what should I get? I've already got some 3 and 6" pads so just need the DA.

Cheers

Sorry, try that  :notme:

I had a split in the wire of my das-6 pro twice now, just as it enters the bottom. Took it apart and re connected it and it's been fine. Try and fiddle with the cable and see if it makes any difference.

Cheers for the idea, I've checked it but it's not the cable

Is there a possibility that the motor brushes may have built up a surface film on them due to lack of use?.

Sounds a little too rough to just be the brushes. To me it sounds like there is something wrong inside the gearbox but its hard to tell by the video.

Why don't you take the brushes out and have a look at the com. first or give it a good run and see if it improves or take it apart and clean it with a fibre stick.

Thanks both. I took the brushes out and they looked ok. The com looked ok as far as I could tell too- mostly copper coloured which you'd expect from a basically new machine. It now doesn't run at all. to me it seemed like the power was being cut as it built up to speed if that makes sense?

Is there any excess movement in the spindle that runs the backing pad?.

My DA6 Pro developed a fault at 2 months old where the drive spindle was separating from the gearbox, CYC dealt with it under warranty, but from what I've seen on Youtube from stripdown videos of different brands, the principles of construction are very similar across the models.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've had a look and the backing plate is solid. I've just rung Meguiars uk and guess what- they won't even repair it an suggested I find someone local to look at it so my advice to anyone wanting to buy a DA polisher is DON'T buy Meguiars.

Well with nothing to loose I've taken the back off this piece of **** and put my multimeter on it. There's power getting to the control unit and the neutral feed is ok out the other side but no 220v out of the control unit to the motor. I can also see the motor's resistance so the control unit is shot. No wonder they stopped making it if the rest were as unreliable as mine!!!

Off to see what to replace it with now

AutoBrite Direct have a sale on at the moment, you might be able to pick something up there.

You might have a valid claim against the retailer under the sale of goods act. I would certainly be trying that avenue as this kind of product with light domestic use should last longer than yours has.

Any Chance I could watch this Private Video please Rusty, Mrs Goldfingers going out,

Thanks, I've had a look but there's nothing I fancy there so I've ordered a DA6 pro from CYC and got £15 off with the detailing world group buy. I did think about the DA6 pro+ but the chap at CYC (who was very helpful) said you can't use the 3" pads with the Pro+

That's not a bad idea. Meguiars don't repair them so I could get my money back from Amazon. I'll investigate this and let you know if I have any success.

Cheers everyone for their input

I have a DAS6 pro and I really like it.

Thanks, CYC said it's better than my G220v plus he's got all the parts if it dies go wrong so at under £100 i though why not! Wife's having a new BMW 2 series so I'll have some thing to practice on LOL

If it does have a problem, I can say first hand that CYC backup is first rate.

They seem to support their stuff with some very good customer service - just my opinion, but I have had to use it and it was painless.

Hope you like it when it arrives, I've got 4" and 5" inch pads and backing plates for mine and it works well.

So I complained to Amazon and they've made a goodwill refund of £40 which is better than I expected so might see if I can get the g220 repaired locally somewhere if I can find someone who can locate the fault in the control unit and get the spares. Failing that I'll put it on ebay for spares.
