ABS kicking in to soon?

Featured Replies

Problem: on braking the ABS kicks in a little too soon, it does not affect braking beyond 5MPH, but it does start too early.

In May-ish 2015 the n/s hub was replaced with the ABS sensor and brake pads.

The discs are worn and a bit thin, would this be the cause?

Ta

Did the problem start when the hub was replaced or more recently?

I would check the state of the ABS rings.

Started in the last two to three weeks, 6 months at least after the hub and sensor replacement.

Needs hooking up to VCDS and watching the wheel speeds under braking and seeing which one is fluctuating.

The sensor which was replaced in June last year reads 0 KPH when the other three read 4 KPH, i.e. it does not read any speed until 4KPH.

So looks like the problem. Or the ABS ring on the hub?

Part no: 1J0927803

Would the garage be interested in replacing it FOC?

After 4kph does it read OK?

I would have a look at the ABS ring yourself first before taking it to a garage.

The plot thickens.

I took the wheel off  and then the ABS sensor, which had some muck on it, which I cleaned off.

Reassembled the sensor and refitted the wheel.

I noticed that the wheel wobbled so I removed it to see if the disc was in position ok, which it was.

There is considerable play in the bearing which was replaced in June at the same time as the sensor.

About 1/4" of movement in the disc with no wheel on.

The hub was replaced with a secondhand one last June which I acquired from a breakers (Volksmania).

The hub was replaced because the two screwholes which secured the caliper to the hub had lost their threads, so the caliper rattled.

So a secondhand hub and a new bearing, sensor and brake pads were fitted by a garage, and it now seems the bearing is worn.

The car failed the MOT in December due to worn bushes on the lower control arm on this side and the other side was going. So I replaced the two control arms, but had no need to touch the hubs.

So why would a bearing fail after 10 months and 6-8k?

They are sealed units.

Either poor quality parts or not fitted correctly. Do you know which make bearing was fitted? Did you supply it or did the garage?

Are you sure the bearing is definitely shot? You didn't mention any droning noise, which I imagine would be horrendous if it had that much play. The disc will move when the wheel is off if it doesn't have retaining screws.

Has the ABS problem gone away now?

Thanks for your comments

The garage fitted the bearing so no idea.

Don't know if the bearing is shot, no droning noise.

Disc had its retaining screw.

Phone the garage which did the work (18 miles away) and they advised to get the nut tightened.

I did not have a 30mm 12 pointed socket so phoned a local garage and took it there.

He tightened the nut up to 250Nm and said sometimes it can be a small amount of grease or similar which can move and cause the nut to come undone, Nylok has its limits.

No idea if it will last but it drives better.

No idea on the ABS but it is probably ok now.
