1998 OCTAVIA 1.6 ENGINE MISFIRE PROBLEM

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a misfire problem with my 1998 1.6 Octavia estate , engine code AKL. The engine has developed a misfire , which is proving difficult to rectify. The engine was previously running ok , then started to misfire at idle and high speed with the engine reluctant to rev . All plugs were removed and checked , 1-3 were a light brown colour , 4 was heavily sooted up giving the impression that it was not firing. Leads were changed along with the plugs, and the sparks were checked by holding the plugs against the engine block and turning the engine over. There was no spark on No4 so the coil pack was changed. This made no difference. A compression test was done on each cylinder and all were around 175 psi. I then had the car tested in the garage and the camshaft position sensor showed up as faulty. This was changed , along with a new cam belt. When fired up again, the car  appeared to be ok at idle but from idle to approx 3000 rpm it misfired as before, then above 3000 rpm it seemed to clear itself , although it revved up better from idle than before. No other faults have shown up to indicate any possible problems. The engine has low mileage for its age , only 127,500 miles. Going off the results of the compression tests , I have been advised by the garage that the engine is in good condition. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Steve.

As said by many other members on the forum in other posts the best way to isolate the problem would be to get any fault codes read using VAGCOM or VCDS then it should be easier to locate the issue.

If you are still getting no spark on cylinder 4 have you tried swapping the coil pack for that cylinder to one of the other cylinders to see if the fault follows it. if it doesn't it could be the wiring to the coil pack that is at fault

Hi Mikec,

Thanks for the reply. The plug on No4 is firing normally after fitting the new coil pack. I may have to take the car to a Skoda dealer

although the car only showed the camshaft sensor code. Having driven the car today for about 70 miles, it now appears to have a misfire on the overrun , ie take your foot off the throttle quickly to get a bang from the exhaust. If it was a car fitted with distributor , points etc... I would think that the timing was a bit out. Looking at the wiring , all appears to be in good condition. I will probably have to take it to a dealer to get it checked out. When I get the result I will post it on here.

Regards,

Steve.
