That 'loan car' fear

Featured Replies

Has anyone else suddenly felt fear at the realisation that the 'convenience' car doesn't have the vital reversing safety equipment because it's a relatively old car?.

I'm now so used to the convenience and safety features it's a shock literally going backwards.

A touch of deskilling also perhaps.

The aviation equivalent of technology deskilling the 'driver'......there is a need now to train pilots how to recognise their deficiencies when actually 'hand flying' ........unintended consequences of technology.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I nearly reversed into another car recently while driving a car that wasn't mine which was a few years old and a basic spec. Totally forgot about the lack of reversing sensors and was just instinctively waiting for the beeps on the sensors! We're definitely losing some of our basic skills by over relying on technology. I rarely use park assist mainly for that reason actually. I'm sure in a few years we'll have forgotten how to drive properly when we'll be relying more and more on autonomous driving aids!

^^^......and the powers are planning on outlawing interference with the autonomous vehicle that they are legislating for.

No driving!

I just had a rental with a reversing camera for a month and was surprised to get into both of my cars that only have bleepers !

Then yesterday I had a brand new loaner with neither !!

Surprised I could reverse it at all ;)

Until like me they've been retired for a time.....and I still don't look over my shoulder.

Not yet. Current car is the first one I've ever had sensor on.

I'm sure I will get deskilled a bit but when I have driven cars with sensors I've found it more of a hinderance with the sensors beping like hell far further from the object than I would like.

The 1 series we had was about 18" for the object when it hit it's peak. I could get cars within 1" manually even the Accord which was 5m long and like reversing a boat.

To me it's about taking it for granted and then suddenly realising it's not there as a backup.
