Strong diesel exhaust fume smell Octavia 2.0 vrs

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've not long bought a 2006 Octavia 2.0 TDI 170

The exhaust fumes smell really bad. Normal diesel exhaust smell but 10x worse. It kinda burns the inside of your nose and almost enough to make your eyes water.

Its not too noticeable while driving but if at in traffic its terrible. Also sometimes while idling its a little lumpy I'd say its worse when cold but still does it when warm. Sometimes seems a bit hesitant when put foot down around 2000-2500 rpm No smoke just a bad smell. It also purges if using cruise control at 30-40 mph or in low gears. It was worse when I tried giving it a clear out. Doing about 70mph in 4th around 4000rpm with cruise control on.

I've used a few full tanks of fuel with cleaner in and its made no difference. I've not checked the oil consumption yet but I'm getting 40mpg average but does go up to about 55mpg if sat at 70mph on motorway so I think fuel consumption is about right

Anybody have any ideas?

Thank in advance

Is there any sign of the exhaust leaking?

Does it still have the dpf?

No sign of exhaust leaking. And Ive no reason to think it hasn't dpf. Yesterday it had a right wobble. When got bk home from work, left it ideling on drive way it the exhaust was making a sputter sound. Almost like a definate misfire. Lifted the bonnet and noticed the breather on the can cover to the intake hose was off. Pushed it back on but its not a good fit. Its been better today so I've ordered a new hose and the gaskets and seals to clean the egr, asv and throttle body. Next on the list is fuel filter

See if those bits make a difference then.

OK, cleaned the egr and asv not really that bad. It has made idling better but the bad smell from exhaust is still there. I've noticed it produces a steam like smoke from the exhaust. I'm wondering if its overfueling slightly. Does anybody know I'd theres an ecu update available from Skoda? I'm thinking it may be trying to constantly regenerate the dpf although im not showing any faults.

Anybody able to shed some light on this. Looking through the service history the timing belt was changed a couple years ago. If the timing is out, could it be giving me these symptoms?

I have tried several different fuels from tesco / sainburys / morrisons / shell and shell v power. It runs best on shell ordinary diesel but still feels there is a flat spot, 1st gear is awefull for pull off feeling very underpowered

Did you get it sorted in the end mate? Mine is exactly the same.

Things iv tried include: (no necessarily in this order)

Stripped and cleaned the EGR and the ASV to like shiny new - no affect.

Replaced intake gaskets - no affect.

Replaced vac pipes that looked a little like they may have a slight nic - no affect.

Forced DPF regen - no affect.

Pipercross air filter - no affect.

Blanked off EGR and then unblanked (just to see) - no affect.

Timing belt changed - no affect.

DPF clean using Innotec DPF doctor - noticeably better performance but still no affect on the smoke and smell problem.

New intake manifold - no affect.

New differential pressure sensor - no affect.

Cleaned turbo - no affect.

Also there are no exhaust or boost leeks at all and compression is still good and even across all cylinders.

I have also confirmed that the MAF and MAP sensors are reading correctly.

The only thing left that i can think of is injectors.

Il post an update if i eventually get round to figuring it out. :)

Hi,

Any update with this smell, and i'm disregarding the post from adam1975 coz it's obs coming from the exhaust pipe?

I'm afraid as they get older and rack up the miles, they stink. I think it's indicative of catalytic convertor failure.  My BMN engined Golf was pretty bad at 12 years old and 90K ish miles.  It was worse when the ambient temperate was in single figures.

I think the only real cure is to replace the cat'.

Oh right, thanks for that mate, i'm just gathering info as it's a new car to me.

Fumes from my 1.6tdi could strip paint off a tank when it's regenerating

My neighbour fixed his similarly afflicted Tiguan with a new clamp and gasket on the exhaust side of his turbo.

Thanks Dude
