VDCS - what is it?

Featured Replies

Hello folks!

I'm very much a newbie when it comes to whole owning and running and fiddling with cars!

I keep seeing people talking about vagcom and VCDS (I know, I got the title wrong :notme: ) and lots of confusing ancronyms!

I noticed (in this post http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/285960-vag-comvcds-for-citigo-a-definitive-guide-to-the-citigos-options/ ) that it might be possible to program cornering fog lights on a Citigo (I'll have an SE L so fog lights are standard, and it's the greentech one so should be similar to Bluemotion Up! in terms of electronics), and my parents have them on a VW camper and I think they're unbelievably useful, so I'd like to see if I could go about activating them on my own car.

I will need a copy of some VW software I think, and whatever wire it is you use to plug your car in!

Many thanks in advance for any help!

If you only want the one change made, it's probably not worth buying the cable. Find someone near you on the users map and ask them to do it for beer money. The genuine VCDS cable is about £250 and includes lifetime software upgrades and support from Ross Tech.

I'd rather have someone who knows their stuff use their software and help me out with changing the various bits n bobs, rather than spending my money on a cable only to then break the car XD

I do look forwards to being able to do things to the car as it'll be MY car, not my parents' car!

I bought one because it's good for keeping an eye on the car as it can flag faults. Also, have 2 cars with electronic parking brakes and if you want to change the discs or pads yourself, you need the cable to rewind the pistons and reset the brake after so probably get your money back in one brake change. Additional benefit of tweaking some options on the cars.

Look on the Ross tech site for info and if your parents have a VW, they might go halves with you as it works across all vag platforms.

Enjoy the car, they are great little motors.

I was considering getting one for myself, but at £270 a pop, it's quite steep, and my parents are unfortunately not the sort to attempt to understand DIY when it comes to cars  :D

They've got a Skoda Yeti and a VW Transporter, but the cars will just get serviced at our friendly local independent (Except mine, for the first 2 services, as they're free with the car)

I only really wanted the cable so I could try to activate the cornering fog lights on my car and switch off the convenience rear wipe function!

£270 for something I'll use once, then probably just pop into a cupboard somewhere never to be used again...

Or I'll be buying myself one when I get a job and have some disposable income!
