Wheel noise & vibration when braking

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Got a 51 Octavia Estate 1.9 TDi

I noticed quite a few weeks back that my brakes started vibrating the steering wheel when slowing down in the range of 30-10mph particularly, and thought it was probably down to warped discs that need doing... I only put cheap discs and pads on about 2-3 years ago, and I am a bit of a late and heavy braker too, so put it on my list of things to get sorted soon.

However I've noticed now that I've also got a sudden classic wubwubwub noise over 15-20mph when I'm driving that gets progressively louder - immediate thought is bearings, but I know that worn bearing noise well, as I had both front bearings done only about 9 months ago. Last time they went very slowly, but this was a LOT quicker - I noticed a feint noise at the start of the week, and I do a 30 mile round trip commute daily, and by Friday it was much louder, and feels louder than the bearings, sort of like a washing machine spinning... but I don't get any feedback on steering wheel (not until I brake anyway!).

The noise does get slightly quieter but more 'smoother' when I pull right, and louder/rougher when I pull left.

So I'm wondering.. have the brakes knacked up the bearings again, or should I be looking elsewhere, like maybe hubs or CVs?

Thanks all!

Sounds very like a bearing issue to me, but also could be cv joint...
