Squealing noise when first pulling away

Recommended Posts

Sorry all been busy.......no update, haven't done anything......some morning it happens, some mornings it doesn't.Strangely leaving it at work all day, doesn't seem to be long enough for it to happen!!  I guess mine has been dpoing it for about a year or so now too....

Might try to get a video....never thought of that really!  Car drives fine and it only happens pulling away and within my estate, got a couple of junctions and it sometimes happens at them too..... I guess mine might sound a little like the video jowal posted, although mine is petrol, my 'squeal' is higher pitched, maybe due to slightly higher revs.........

Hmmmm....alternator pulley.....now there's interesting!!

Just Google 'VW freewheel pulley' or 'VW alternator clutch pulley' loads of stuff about them out there.  I didn't diagnose it myself but my local specialist said it's quite common.  I had my car in for all the belts to be done anyway and they didn't charge any extra labour to change the pulley, just the cost of the part.  Mine sounded more like the 'classic' slipping belt squeak mainly because the belt was slightly worn and the pulley did not free wheel so the belt was slipping on the pulley.  It wouldn't have made the noise with a new belt but would have worn the new belt faster and then start squeaking again.

Edit to say that I found this article:

Video

Noticed that a noise is more persistant in the morning in a few km of a ride. And it is more noticeable if the car is facing up the hill when pulling away.

Any development on this particular noise? Mine has developed exactly the same noise as this within the last week. Is this more likely to be clutch issues?

Yep, that;s my recent noise as well. Cold mornings it happens, especially noticeable when you slip the clutch a little bit more than usual when pulling away. If it's just a little bit of wear, I think I will live with it a bit longer. DMF usually rattle when they really are worn, don't they? Don't fancy the big bill to replace DMF and clutch, but if I have to, so be it. Recorded the noise and going to pop down my local independent garage to see if I can get it to happen when he listens to the car, or play the recording from my phone. Strange why it does not occur after working all day and then starting up the car to drive home. Just in the mornings!

So, apologies for not adding any more to this thread, life got busy. Anyway, I had the car serviced in August at an independent garage and asked their opinion, the two main culprits seemed to be clutch release bearing and/or DMF. Lats week I finally bit the bullet and got them to replace the clutch (the squealing was really doing my head in), we discussed the DMF as well,  and we agreed that as a precaution he'd order a DMF, and only fit it if he got my go ahead, if it didn't  need done, he'd let me know and send the spare part back (which I thought was pretty decent). Needless to say, after stripping it all down and seeing the play that there was in the DMF, his recommendation was to replace it (seeing as he had the gearbox apart anyway and would cost the same aain in labour to repalce that on a separate occasion).

When I collected the car he showed me the old clutch components and there was quite a bit of play in the DMF. There was a fair bit of wear on the plates too.  He was undecided about the bearing - from what I saw it was

 pretty hard to tell.

Anyway, after many beer vouchers were exchanged, I drove off. The car is great now (not squealing at all) and I'm well pleaseed with the result.  Oh, while I remember, the squealing started about 58K miles......that was all changed at 77K miles.....just thought I'd mention it for the record (you can get away with it for a while......if you can put up with it)!

And following on from my previous post on the 21/January, now the cold weather is back, back on some morning cold starts comes that bloomin noise. Same noise as Pods video post. Maybe one day when I do have a new DMF and clutch fitted, it will go away.

All very interesting, my 2010 petrol VRS Estate makes a squealing noise when I pull away as the clutch is under load around the bite point (sounds like I'm stepping on a baby Wookiee) and sometimes when it happens it feels like there is a distinct 'step/jump/jerk' in the clutch pedal if I'm using a lot of throttle. Sounds like release bearing or DMF going off your experience here.

Oh yea, I'm at 55k....

Should I be proactive and change, or hang on? It is bloody annoying....

Not been in here in a while - have actually sold my Skoda and went to a Kia Sorento (number of changes in life and car needs.....). I did have a laugh about the baby wookiee comment, yeah, that was the one!! It really as bloody annoying!  I never noticed any definite jump/jerk with it though!

I can only go with my exeprience and say that I got another almost 20K miles out of it before I repalced it all, you might manage more or less. The mechanic that swapped mine mentioned he had seen them where the bearing had catastrophically failed - caused a bit of a mess and caused additional labour time to change over the clutch/DMF. I guess you just have to take your chances (but that noise really did annoy me.....)
