When I bought my Vrs 5 years ago with 80k on the clock, I immediately had it remapped at JKM with a Revo map, and at the same time had a panel filter and Forge 007 fitted, mainly for peace of mind and longevity.

 

Car is now on 160k and running and strongly as ever. She is always spoiled with V-power in the tank and Mobil 1 in the sump.

 

I've occasionally looked at the Forge valve to give it a once-over, but it just seems to sit in it's place and do its job as well as the day it was fitted. So as far as satisfying my buying criteria, it's 'job done' as they say!

 

 

Out of curiosity, I had a look round the web regarding servicing requirements for these valves, and Forge recommend checking every 12k miles and offer a service kit for 15 quid comprising a new spring, seals and grease. Shamefully, as I say, I've not really given mine any attention in 80k miles heheh...

 

So question is.....I guess it might be well overdue for a little love and service with the kit right? And if so, has anyone else bothered to do the same with theirs, and did it need doing or was it pointless?

It will be worth doing, some fresh grease and new o rings will help to ensure it remains able to hold boost. As you know servicing is a preventative measure to keep things working as they should, neglect at your peril!

I was about to service mine but I couldn't be arsed and went back to the hassle free oem valve.

well worth it did mine when i bought it second hand, like yellow car says preventive maintenance. best type of maintenance! 

agreed. mine wasn't holding boost when I bought the car... got that £15 service kit (its easy to do too) and it cured all my issues! I will do it every year from now on!

Wasn't there some kind of improved revised piston made available in the service kits as well?

Yeah that was the revised one as they were aware of some leakage issues with the previous design

Thanks guys. Kit ordered, nice easy little servicing job for the next sunny day on the driveway with a large cup of tea and Planet Rock on the garage stereo. Bliss! :D

yes... what I took out of mine didn't have the o-ring on the bottom of the piston, the piston in the service kit had the extra o-ring.... maybe thats what cured my issues!

Yeah, Absolute isn't bad if I'm feeling more mellow.....however it has too many bloody adverts!!!

 

I used to love Team Rock - sometimes Planet Rock has too much 70's prog / blues - but Team Rock has disappeared from DAB and is online only now :(

if you get an absolute radio account, and listen through the net (I do this with the iphone, and a "hive" bluetooth speaker) they take most of the ads out, and add a "bonus" track.... which is always a cool song, something like "I dont like mondays" or "down in the tubestation at midnight" ;)

I mean if the Forge requires servicing - and assuming it handles boost better - than what kind of maintenance could we expect for the OEM diagram valve? Does it needs to be changed every now and then?

Only if it fails, which isn't very often. Plus it's a sealed unit as far as I'm aware, it's simply inherently more reliable and no regular change or anything like it is recommended. The only thing that can go wrong is that the diaphragm can perish and cause leakage that way, but you can't take a preventative measure to avoid it and as said it's quite rare. They're cheap enough anyway, cost you 3 forge service kits and will still outlast it.

Thanks for the explanation! It came in the right time, as I am about to let my Octavia VRS being mapped in 2 weeks. And I had a similar VRS before a couple of years ago which has seen of the valves giving up a few months after mapping. Can't remember which one and it was then replaced by a Forge item (no given reason)...

Not sure what happened there, they're usually good well into 'stage 2' (whatever that means). One problem is the 17705 fault code has 'check diverter valve' as a suggestion on vcds when it pops up, but if it's an oem valve then that is rarely the problem. If you're concerned and going for a map renew it with a stock one for less than half price of a forge, but to be honest it should be ok. Don't get me wrong it's nice to have a shiny valve that gives extra oomph to the tssshhh but in reality the standard valve is a winner. Pretty much a fit and forget item.
