Plastidip

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm keen on doing some subtle styling to the VRS and plan to use plastidip so that it's temporary and easier to apply.

Now, the parts that I want to apply it to have some stone chips.  Is there a temporary filler I can use to smooth the stone chips before applying plastidip?

What colour would you recommend for silver and what parts would you recommend applying it to? So far, I'm thinking the top half of the chrome grill, the bottom lip of the front bumper and maybe the side strips (probably won't though).

Cheers!

I can't really help you with your question but I would heartily recommend you get the rustoleum version instead of the branded plastidip stuff, it's far better in many ways imo. I did a wee guide when I did a few bits on my 500 Abarth so if you need any pointers holler.

Cheers for the reply mate. May I ask why you favour one over the other, and do you have a link to the guide you did please?

It's on another forum but I will try and find it later and put it up mate.

Imo every aspect of the rustoleum is better, coverage, appearance, easier to peel at edges and it has lasted a lot longer with no need to re apply. The plastidip was getting a bit tatty after a couple of months but the rustoleum is still spot on after about 9.

Here you go, obviously not a Skoda but same principles apply, I've done the boot handle, mirrors and the front whisker of my 500. I might try doing the rear badges on our Monte at some point.

After having plasti dipped a few bits on my car 3 months ago and due to a weekends road trip (including getting stuck behind a gritter, spreading in June!  shocked.gif ) the front whisker was looking really a bit worse for wear, so thought I would put a quick guide up if anybody is fancying doing it.  thumb.gif

After a good wash and dry I stripped the old plastidip off, thoroughly cleaned up the whisker and masked off the surrounding area, leaving about a cm gap from the chrome  and including putting paper between the badge and radiator.

First coat, sprayed from about 10cm and just enough to lightly cover the whisker.

Three coats later (leaving 5-10 mins between coats) making sure to get all the angles covered, I removed all the surrounding paper etc leaving just the tape adjacent to the whisker.

Gently pulled away plasti dip from the whisker (using a cocktail stick to separate when needed).

And viola! all done and dusted in an hour or so.  grin.gif

Really like this stuff, totally reversible and a cheap mod.

What is the Rustoleum product called?

Used plastidip (branded name item) and found its ok use. Two worthy points is prep and temp.

Make sure the area is clean, use a good panel cleaner and make sure that it's dry. This will help the paint to attach it's self. First coat should just be a light dusting as a keying layer, the rest will build it up.

Take you time and you'll get a better finish. Also top tip, heat the can first, it will spray better. (place it in a hot bucket of water).

Not tired Rustoleum but have tired the Plastidip named version - also worth noting there is two versions - US and European spec. They spray totally different (according to the internet).

Great thing about either of this products is, if you get it wrong its easy to start over.

See my project thread for more info about plastidip.
