Mini Convertible Roof Protection

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Bit of a strange one this - protected the other half's mini convertible at the weekend with Gtechniq i1. The roof was fully cleaned and dry before application. Rained today and this is what we got...

Messaged Rob on DW and apparently he seems to think it doesn't work on mini roofs which seems odd to me.

Anyway, does anyone have any experience particularly with Mini convertible roofs and what did you use to protect them?

Thanks!

That does look odd Ben - not something i have seen.... or any great experience with - sorry.

Any factory pre-treatment products to beware off that may still remain?

Strange effects there - not familiar with convertible roofs, is that a suede/alcantara type material?

I've used I1 before on the Superb alcantara seats and was really surprised at the effectiveness of I1 at dealing with liquids. They literally just ran off and collected at the bottom of the seat base, not soaking in at all.

Sorry to ask, but is "Rob" something to do with Gtechniq? as I would certainly approach them direct with your photographs and ask them if this is a normal reaction when Gtechniq i1 is used on a convertible roof (mini or otherwise).

I've found that most manufacturers are very helpful if you ask them, I've contacted several with regard to a factory paint finish I have on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle that is called Black Denim which is a Matte finish and all of those that make products for matte finishes that replied (strangely Swissvax didn't reply) were honest enough to say that they had no experience with the paint finish and suggested trying a small area that wouldn't be seen however that is very difficult on a naked cruiser!

"Rob" is Rob Earle, the MD of GTechniq. Very helpful and very knowledgeable, always interacts with customers.

Sounds like he is dodging this one.

It could be:

Not cleaned properly.

Not applied properly.

Failure of product due to heat/cold/time.

Its clean and start again, but I would be contacting Rob more and get him to help.

Maybe worth starting a thread or two on DW about it as well.

Ben knows his stuff. I have read the thread over on DW. He explains the process he has gone through.

Rob has offered him support by sending out more product or a refund.

Ahhh, not read DW, just going by what I see on here.

Will go look at DW thread.

Read thread and Rob is being very cagey.

It either works on all fabrics or it dosn't.

I would hassle Rob to try and get him to send a local authorised detailer over for a look and maybe sort out either for free or a discount.

Worth a try  :p

(for soft tops I use AutoGlym or Renovate, PW, brush (depending on material) and wet vac)

Thanks for all the replies.

I do like to think I know what I'm doing ha! The roof was cleaned with W2 at 1:10 and left to dry for two days so it was clean and dry.

Gtechniq and Rob have been brilliant as I thought they would in dealing with this. I have been offered a full refund or a new bottle of product.

I am in discussion with him over PM about it all but I have accepted his offer of more product purely based on the fact that I know it is still a good product, just a shame it can't be used for this purpose.

There are not many authorised Gtechniq near me apart from Jim White.

I am going to purchase the Autoglym kit and try that.

It could be the type of roof, I'm not sure. Any other suggestions?

Good stuff - thanks for the update.

Just catching up with the DW thread as well Ben.

I didnt realise you were near Jim White actually;

i really fancy a roadtrip down to see him at work.

Jim's detailing setup is stunning - mega jealous of his premises.

How old is the roof?

They do come with some protection to save them whilst in storage.

It "might" be two products not getting on.

My advice if your going for more product, take it to local detailer and get his advice/view.

Ring him up, point him at DW and just ask if you can pop down so he can see it.

It's about 2 weeks old.

The roof was cleaned with W2 beforehand to remove anything that was already on the roof.

I'm going to use the rest of the product on seats etc. Will try the Autoglym kit on the roof and report back.

Thank you for your thoughts and insight.

We should organise a trip over! I agree his workshop is quality. Follow him on Instagram and enjoy seeing his updates.

Great idea! I actually know Jim from the Mini forums initially;

way before i got into serious detailing as a hobby.

Small world i guess.... love his updates from the workshop!

Just because you cleaned it, dosn't mean what ever is/was on it has totally gone.

I know certain car glass (when new) dosn't like having sealants applied, they react badly to it (as in the sealant dosn't quite bond and seems like the sealant has failed) and am wondering if same here.

I would still go down the visit to the detailer and ask what he thinks (if you can), it might just be a simple problem.

The only soft top products I have used are AG, Nanolex and Renovo (but thats on old hoods not new).

Good luck and hope everything goes to plan!

That is true, it's certainly a possibility.

Rob has asked me to clean it again, and reapply in a couple of different ways to see if that has any impact.

If not I will take a trip over to see Jim.

Last resort will be using the AG kit which I have seen good results from online.

Cheers again MozzieOwner!

I would stick with the G for now (since you have it) and if it dosnt go according to plan, take a trip and see what he thinks.

Any update on this Ben?

Assuming the new batch of Gtechniq gear arrived - or havent you had time to tackle it as yet?

Nothing yet mate as Gtechniq parcel hasn't arrived yet. Have sent Rob a quick PM this morning to have a look. Need to get it done sooner rather than later!
