Tart...

Featured Replies

Right boys, where to start-

Has anyone painted the outer faces on thier Vrs manifold heatshield?

If so was it successful or stupid........

Just wanting to tidy the heatshield up as its looking tired and the rest of the engine bay is mint!

Couple of different looks I went for on my old Ibiza.

Now I like them!

What paint did you use?

I was looking to us the vht flameproof stuff, but don't know if that's a bit overkill...

I used etch primer and regular car paint.

This is mine. I did have a white engine cover but it went funny with the heat

Great stuff, cheers boys!

I'll get on the bufty tart routine this weekend! ;)

Have you seen the thread or pics of a vRS with the Heat Shield polished?

I think maybe in the vRS Picture & Review thread.  Maybe come up with a search.

Pics maybe come up on Goolge images.

I haven't seen that one.

I was contemplating polishing it, but it's the daily driver and I would get fed up of having to keep it buffed....

So I've gone and painted it red.... Seen as I have gone with the luminous snot green/ red theme on the car!?!

I'm liking the red :) might give it a go myself.

I'll get a picture up once it's dried and back on the motor!

Only thing is its drying matt, what with it being high temperature paint.

Looks good in sunlight though!

Mac is it easy to remove? plus which paint did you use ? Cheers

Dead easy mate,

Take the plastic engine cover off first, the you'll see two m10 nuts holding the heatshield on. Take those off, then remove the three torx bolts on the front of the manifold cover. Be careful if they're rusty!

I gave the heatshield a good scrub with a brass wire attachment on a Dremel to clean it up, getting rid of the crap on the face of it.

Then wiped it over with cellulose thinners and sprayed it with Halfords very high temperature paint.

Took a wander over to my local branch by pure chance today and they had in a few colours- such as metallic red... Hence being a tart!

I gave it about four coats leaving 15 mins between, then after it dried an hour or so bunged it in the oven to cure- slowly took it up to 120 degrees for an hour. The less the wife knows about that the better ;)post-136973-0-67875800-1463257366_thumb.jpegpost-136973-0-67875800-1463257366_thumb.jpeg

However, I have probably gone overkill on the job! I'm sure any decent automotive paint will work just as well!

And the finished job.

Really liking the matte finish actually.

You can get clear VHT paint, do you think a couple of coats over that finish would make it glossy?

It probably would do, worth a try I guess.

I'm leaving it as it is for now, see how it lasts over a little while.
