TDI DSG struggling in second gear on upward slope

Featured Replies

We just recently swapped our 1.2 TSI DSG for a 170 TDI DSG.  Everything has been fine so far apart from one odd issue.  Coming up from my work underground car-park on a cold engine, the car starts up the ramp in D1, then rapidly changes to D2, whereupon it then almost comes to a halt.  Pressing the accelerator somewhat harder causes the car to change back to D1 and it then shoots away as would be expected with the 170.  I would have expected the TDI to pull quite strongly pretty much from tick-over, even in D2.  Has anyone else experienced anything similar, please?  Is there an impending gearbox or engine issue?  The problem is much less pronounced with a warm engine.

I never experienced this with either the TSI DSG or a previous VW Passat PD 170 DSG.

Seems like another example of reduced CO2 emission programming madness.

Obviously sports mode would hold first.

I find recalibrating the throttle pedal helps when these strange gearshifts occasionally happens.

If it's just that specific location your are not happy about use S instead of D until you are out on the road. Using S extends the time in each gear. Possibly a tight engine which will soon loosen up.

I think what you will find is that it drives in 2nd gear but slips the clutch to smooth it out which makes it feel a little sluggish.

If you just keep a constant pressure on the throttle it will do just fine.

Thanks - how would I go about doing this, please?

Thanks, Fred.  Yes, I could do this, or flip it over to manual mode.  At the moment, I'm trying to figure out whether "they're all like it" or whether there is a developing problem with the gearbox.

Thanks - how would I go about doing this, please?

I use this method:

With the ignition "off";

-Press the throttle pedal to the floor

-Turn on the ignition and hold the throttle down for about 20 seconds

-Turn the ignition back off and then lift off the throttle
