Wallowing suspension

Featured Replies

My dad just bought an 11 plate 1.4 tsi dsg elegance from a Skoda dealer.

He says the suspension is wallowy ? Anyone else understand this or is the suspension just soft.

I have a VRS so much harder.

It could just be he's old ;)

Any help aporeciated.

How many miles has it done?

Tell him to fit some Bilstein B6's :)

He is nearly 70 lol

50k isn't much miles for the shocks to be past their best but B6s will transform the handling and ride is only slightly firmer at low speed and the ride gets better the faster you go, so I would not rule it out as an option.  They are great shocks for pairing up with standard springs for those who do not wish to lower the ride height but after an upgrade.,

Geez, usually the old duffers like a floaty boat.  I know my old man complained bitterly when we forced him to sell his rolly-polly Yank spec Accord and get into a much tighter Accord Euro.

At 50k miles the dampers should still be OK if still on original springs.

Have a look at the tyre pressures as Skoda traditionally have really low recommended pressures - around 30-32psi.  Bring them up to 36psi and see how that feels.  If it feels a bit harsh then vary from front to rear - try 36F/32R as an alternative.

At 36 psi the centre part of the tyre will certainly wear faster than it should. I have mine set to 32F/34R. Gives even wear and a good ride on my VRS

What kind of car is your dad coming from? as stock non vrs suspension is pretty good and would not describe it as wallowly.

It understeers a bit when pushed hence my upgrade to B6 shocks which inspires more confidence for faster driving.

A 10 year olf freelander.

Thanks for all your help. He is going to get it checked, will suggest he checks tyre pressure.

My Elegance has over 80000 miles and rides fine .Admittedly it has sport suspension.Feels firmly planted in contrast to a hired Toyota Corolla , brand new in NZ last month.

I run 38-40psi.  I don't get wear issues and 80% of my driving is (was, before I got a CBD job and joined the masses on the train) motorway, straight line boredom.  My last set of Michelin Primacy lasted 75,000km (2yrs 9months) and I still managed to sell them as a roadable tyre when I sold the wheels they were mounted on.  I do know a *little bit* about tyres & suspension if you've seen some of my other posts.  With a lot of these things, I find it better to start with the basic, cheap stuff and work your way upwards

If the OP's Dad is anything like my father (87 years old), he will be doing very little mileage and the sidewalls will perish before the tyres wear.  Also, the old blokes tend to put lower pressures in anyway, as they are used to the good old days of crossply tyres & 24psi.

Anyway, the OP can do whatever he wants with the advice.  I doubt running higher pressures for a few weeks as an experiment will be the end of the world.
