Battery or Alternator?

Featured Replies

Tried to start the car this morning-nothing-its clicking but not turning at all-yet the radio and lights work as i tested them later but not the engine:(

Now i know its cold as anything at the moment but the battery was only replaced in April-would the radio etc work if the alternator was faulty?

Alternator i think is only a few years old too:confused:

Any ideas?

I have a Felicia GLX 95

Sticking starter motor is the most likely cause. Especially if the alternator and battery have been replaced recently.

:) If it starts when jump started then the battery is flat, either because it's faulty, or because it's being drained by a fault on the car, or maybe not being charged by the alternator.

If it still doesn't start when jumped [ooeerr:D ], then you have a fault with the starter motor or it's wiring, or hopefully not .. a siezed engine!!

does smack the bugger with a hard object not work here? starter motor i mean

If the starter motor is clicking when you turn the key, and everything else electrical is fine, it's most likely that the battery hasn't got enough juice in it to power the starter. Could be a duff battery, or simply that it needs charging. Cold weather, like were having at the mo, puts a lot of extra strain on the battery.

hi, if it was my car i would remove the battery and put it on charge and check each cell with an hydrometer , the lights/radio will still be working even if the battery is not up to turning the starter motor . i think the freezing temperatures have found the weakness with the battery .

If the radio/lights and so on work but it just dont start its deffo the starter motor, looks like a canister with 2 or 3 wires bolted to the engine, usualy its one of the wires that have corroded of, have look did this to 2 fiestas and one fiat, 12p spade connecter and 15 minutes work.

IMHO the battery could hold enough charge to power the radio and lights yet not enough to crank the engine. I suspect your radio will work with 1 amp, your lights with 5 amps but your starter motor could require at least 40 amps to turn.

yeah and about

This happened to me as well, when i had my old car. It turned out to be the ignition barrell, strange but true.... just a thought :D

Hi!

I have had 2 Skoda Pickup's over the last 3 years, driving 50000km/year I have changes alternators every year. This is a weakness. In the beginning all the indicator lights in the dashboard started showing a weak light, then when the engine god hot it slowly drained the battery. Putting in a new battery only solved the problem for a day or two.

I always have a spare alternator at hand........

Takes only 5 minutes to replace!
