Brake Upgrades: What about rear?

It seems front upgrades are the thing. One reason I'm thinking of doing it is that the the stock componants look like they've come from a rusty scrapyard and frankly, spoil the look of the alloys.

Thing is, if I do the fronts, the rears are gonna stand out as even more $hitty, so why doesn't anyone talk about replacing the rear rust-buckets? Can it be done as an upgrade to a bigger disc?

Getting a vRS next year.... still not the point though! I don't want drums now!!

save your pennies and put them towards a vRS :)

Or do a vRS rear brake conversion...

...but if you're changing the car, then there's really not a lot of point in still spending out on this one!!

i think the point hes looking for is why do people not upgrade from small disks to big disks.. not from drums to disks.

I would agree that even tho they do little breaking over all, its how they make the car look, and the little disks on the back when you have then on display look a big odd.. i would like to see how nice a vrs looks with some big disks front and back. Its only for cosmetic appearance but isn't that the same with most external mods?

Fitting lower springs would reduce the weight transfer rear->front under braking, so maybe there's scope for a minor upgrade but IMO the first thing would be to upgrade the fronts.

Agree that the rear disks appear pointlessly small.

You could always just replace the rear std. discs to make it look new all round

The reason the rear discs go rusty is due to the fact they dont do alot. Putting bigger ones on the rear means they will do even less.

Yeah, but would better quality discs rust less? (I'm thinking of Mr GolfTurbo's on the front).

As for the rear, I just think aesthetically, larger discs would make the wheels look more........substantial? It seems a bit wierd seeing all that empty space

Brake discs go rusty no matter what brand you use.

Here's a thought. Small brake discs probably don't take that long to get to a good temperature because they aren't that big. Big brake discs would take longer as they are bigger. The rear discs don't get used much so would need to heat up quickly so therefore small discs would be better. Harsh braking on cold brakes constantly can warp and even crack them.

Is that feasible?

More stopping power up front = less weight on rear = over braked = problem.

Unless you fit a bias control thingy.

One of the main reasons I've never saught to uprate the front is I would loose the balance..just upgraded the pads, discs and fluid, keeps it all in synch to a degree.

It has been done, pretty sure someone on here put an audi s3 (or was it TT?) rear setup on the back - agree with you it would look much better and I doubt it would cause any braking problems........ I had a mk5 fiesta previously and put large disks on the front and rear and had no issues

OK, lots of different opionions here!!!

Having sold lots of the 312mm Set Up to mainly Fabia and Golf Owners I can report that after the initial bedding in period no one has reported problems with brake balance.

There is a conversion available that I know fits the MK4 Golf (but not sure on Fabia) which uses a vented 256mm TT set up and a specially made mount. I'm trying to find a good price for these at present.

Potentially fitting bigger back brakes could cause brake balance issues but again quite a few MK4 Golf drivers have done this conversion and not had a problem although with a lighter fabia I'm not so sure.

Cheers for that, the 256 conversion was exactly what I was mentioning previously, the brakes on the fiesta were 280mm at the front and 240 at the back, remembering it only weighed 980kg - it never once felt like it had any balance problems so would be surprised if this setup would affect the fabia.

Fitted the 312 setup of you and they are great :thumbup: Will be very interested in the 256 setup if you can sell as a set

There is already a circuit (or set thereof) that ensures brake balance is 'kept'.

The larger discs mean a bigger surface area to get rid of the heat, and the better caliper design means more feedback.

Uprated brake fluid will help too :)

haha yes but only because he didnt set it up right on the first run - he'd cut through the wire that controlled the abs for the rear - doh.. it was the first one he ever did :D

I did on my old Fabia using Foxy's kit. The MK4 kit doesnt work on the Fabia, the disc rubs on the centre of the carrier. I didnt proceed further with trying to make it fit. With the brembos on the front the braking was fine as it was.
