Urgent Help DLT Tape drive problem

Help

I am having an issue with a DLT 8000 tape drive at work.

Basically a tape is stuck in the drive, and despite my best efforts, no amount of pressing the unload button will get the tape out.

The entire row of LED's along the right/bottom (depending on how you look at the drive) are flashing on/off, when you press unload the drive makes a whirring noise but after 30 secs the lights flash again.

I have already tried power cycling the drive, is there a way to force this tape out?

I believe their is a way. Think it envoles opening the unit and theirs a manual eject. Not too sure as I wasn't around the HP guy when he done it.

Hi, Manny,

The tape leader has become detached, I'm afraid. You'll need an engineer. As you may know, the DLT drive uses a flexilble leader that engages with the tape in the cartridge. If this falls off it's hook, you get this kind of problem. I would discard this tape, too.

Got it sorted, took the server apart, removed drive. Then I connected it to a PC power supply so I could see what was going on, managed to persuade it to give the tape back after holding on the unload button for 10 mins. Put it all back together, stuck a new tape in and it seems ok.

Nice one!

I should send that tape to the Home For Retired DLT's, though.

Tape has been well and truely retired, you can only throw so much tape round the office. Streamer anyone LOL.
