Rear fog light

Featured Replies

Hi

I've got a problem with my rear fogs on a Fabia Estate (52 plate 1.4 petrol). It *appears* that the foglight is constantly on (not showing that on dashboard). My problem is I can't figure out where the foglights are!

Is there only one rear foglight on the offside, or should both rear tail lights brighten when the foglight switch is pulled on? I can't bear other drivers with constant foglights on in normal driving conditions, so don't want to fall into that category.

Also, what is the bulb spec for the rear tail/fog lights. I can't find the bit in the Skoda manual that tells me what to use (helpful hints on how to get the bulbs out, but nothing on what to use), I'm not sure the bulbs in there are the right ones, and the suggestions from Halfords appear not to work at all.

PS thanks to those that helped with the warm start problem I was having - I'm going to get the coolant sensor changed in the new year.

The Fabia only has one foglight as standard. However, it is easy to get both going.

David, I can't help you on your specific problem, not being a Fabia owner. The Superb handbook is very helpful, as it gives a full list of all the bulbs used, so I am surprised the Fabia one doesn't have a similar list.

What I can say is that the Halfords bulb application list isn't accurate. I needed to replace the tail/fog light bulb in my Superb. Looking at the bulb, the pins are offset, rather than being opposite each other. The bulb suggested by the Halfords book doesn't have the offset pins.

Hope you get it resolved soon.

Hi

Thanks for your replies:

1. You said it has one foglight as standard. Which side is lit, is it the driver's/offside? Maybe I'm just blind, but I can't see an awful lot of difference between on and off setting. I've changed the bulb, but as I said before, I'm not convinced it's the right one.

2. Yes, I was surprised that there's no list of bulbs. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Unless there's just a page or two missing from my particular copy.

The rear fog light is the same bulb as the driver's side tail light. It's a dual filament bulb (a stop-tail light bulb, in fact) and the difference you should be seeing is the difference between a tail light and a brake light.

The passenger side bulb is identical, but there isn't a wire going to the 21 watt filament, so it doesn't light (until you add a wire, that is).

It's possible to fit the bulbs upside down by mistake, in which case you would have a driver's side 'tail' light brighter than the passenger's side, and little difference between tail lights and tail+rear fog light.

i thought on fabia unlike the octy the side that fog light is on is chosen through VAG-COM i.e all wiring is actually there but inactive and by adding the extra wire like the octy it makes it work???

Its in the Highway code as to which it must be that works. Plus, I can't find it in VAG-COM. Not saying its not there, but its well hidden.

I could be wrong... just i swear in an old techy convo ages ago it was mentioned that the computer at factory set-up the fabia to according to which side to light. Where as octy is wired from start to be either LHD/RHD for lights.

In UK it must be drivers side,... its to identify outside of vehicle for overtaking purposes.

Bryand, you've solved the problem, you're a star!. Many thanks. I thought I'd fixed the problem earlier, but then realised that both bulbs appeared too bright, and what you said was spot on i.e. little difference between tail and tail+fog caused by them fitted upside down.

I suspect that someone had replaced the rear offside bulb incorrectly, and it had shifted into its proper position when I went over a bump i.e. permanent tail+fog mode, looking like the fog light was always on. Re-installing both bulbs until only one coil was lit on each worked fine. The fog lights now switch on and off, with a noticeable difference in brightness on the offside as it should.

On the more amusing side, this was fixed at 11.45pm (just couldn't wait until morning to try it out) after a few too many glasses of wine. This resulted in a dropped bulb inside the lens casing (thought I'd have to remove the whole light fitting) and then again down the back of the light housing (behind the bootlining material). It's amazing what you can do with pinch nosed pliers and Blue-Tac ;-)

Thanks again
