How detailing products are marketed or why do you buy what you do

Featured Replies

Here's my pre Bank Holiday ramble. I was idly surfing the net and came across a review for Mitchell & King Pure cleaner. Browsing their Web site it occurred to me that the product was being sold almost as a cosmetic - bottle shape, label design even the name.

This started me thinking as I browsed more reviews where much was made of the smell of a product and even the colour and I wondered what drives your buying choice ? Is it function over form ...... if the product works then how it smells looks etc are not particularly important - I know this is my preference

Are you led by reviews / Internet chatter I admit this drove me to buy Sonax BSD when DW went crazy over it ?

Is cost the big driver as per EZ Car Care products or do you like the whole image thing especially over expensive waxes

As I said I thought I'd throw this out for general discussion over the weekend

I tend to look at reviews Alot if I'm honest. The fancy looking bottles of products don't sway me at all, if it's a nice looking label and bottle it's a bonus. As long as what's inside works and works very well I'm a happy consumer. A good smell I can give or take. Some products I have smell amazing, others not so good and others none at all. Again, a bonus if it has a nice scent. Makes it nicer to work with.

As for waxes, nice glass jars, well presented boxes are a big yes for me but only if the wax inside is worth the extra effort. I tend to try & test a wax before I spend the money.

It's all personal preference though of course. [emoji4]

Think marketing has a lot to do with what we buy. Pretty colured bottles fragrances, and the like. We like to try different products makes us feel good, and finding that little gem is wonderfull.

Nothing better than compliments on the fruits of our labour. Cost has to come into it somewhere, value for money but every one has there own favourite we always go back to. Reviews and member recomendations

also come into it. I must admit i have no bottles or hanging air freshners complete waste of money and stink to high heaven. Can not beat the fresh clean natural smell of a clean car.

I use leather products on the seats, and a good all purpose cleaner diluted down on all plastic trim. Never eat or drink in any car iv owned dont smoke either. My favorite wash i always go back to is zymol love the smell and finish it gives.

I'm a big fan of reviews. And the more I read on a product the better. If I find the right product, I'm happy to pay top dollar, but it has to have the WOW Factor. Samples are an excellent way of experimenting. I've been lucky enough for some of the great lads on here to send me some samples.

When it comes down to what products I buy, it normally comes down to ease of use and finish. Price is in there too, but after the afore mentioned.

Very much the same story from my point of view Hunty.  ;)

For my detailing - i get great enjoyment from:-

1.Reading others reviews

2.Purchasing and reviewing myself or with friends like yourself, Karl, Shaun, etc.

3.Going with launch deals, GB's and such like with the key suppliers. Like KKD... seldom disappoints.

What I've bought has mostly been from reviews, If I see that someone likes a product or there is a picture f a shiny car that says they used a certain produce (like AG HD wax and Sonax BSD) then I'll think about getting that next time I need some. Failing that I'll buy from the same company that makes the product that I already like, because if they make a good polish, chances are they will also make other things to the same standard.
