Cooling fan not working

My engine management light has come on and the only thing I have noticed is that the cooling fan does not kick in (car tried to overheat sat in traffic) and the maxidot reads 'emssions workshop' when I turn the engine on. I haven't checked the fault code yet, will do this weekend but does anyone know what the problem might be and how to solve it?
