EV Conversions

With all the talk of hybrids, electric drivetrains, mobile hydrogen bombs etc.... it got me thinking. Do people reckon there could be a market for converting older cars to electric power? I know Delorean Motor Company did an electric DMC12 last year, and a guy from one of the landrover forums I used to frequent converted a Freelander to electric power to run to work and back. What really got me thinking was a post on Pistonheads about a Ferrari 308

Interesting idea. What do people think of converting older cars? Good idea for when petrol/diesel eventually run out? I personally think so, especially as battery technology improves and the cost comes down. Maybe even transplant entire drivetrains from say a Prius, into other cars. Electric powered vRS anyone???

Suspect when you get into making storage for batteries etc that it probably wouldn't be practical.

Maybe if batteries start to shrink to the size of the fuel tank it'll be an option.

True, battery size is currently an issue, however, if you have a look at the link to the Ferrari article, everything fits in the engine bay, with maybe some room taken up by the controller electrics. In maybe 5-10 years time, I reckon it could be a flourishing business to convert older classics to EV power - especially with a lot of cities looking at going zero emission status. Better start saving I reckon, could be my retirement fund......
