Lump start up,Rev's searching when idling

Featured Replies

Hi I have an 04 plate VRS estate when I start it from cold it is lumpy and sounds like it's going to cut out, then once warm runs ok but when sat at the light's or a junction the revs start to search from 8-900 rpm down to 4-500 rpm then back up again just wondering if anyone has any ideas what it could be, cheers

Try cleaning your throttle body, that fixed a similar problem I had a while back.

It may be a dodgy coolant sensor, what dues the gauge read when warm?.

Check around the inlet manifold for any split pipes and hoses sounds similar to issues I had recently

Thanks guy's what can I clean the throttle body with, the temp reads about half way on the gauge and are the pipes around the back of the engine?

I bought some carb cleaner from ebay for about £8.  You'll need a replacement throttle body gasket too - also about £8.

I followed this guide:

I know NOTHING about cars and managed it.

As for the pipes, I was advised to get a boost leak smoke test done.  See my (currently unsolved) thread here:

Hope this helps.

I've noticed one of the pipes to the right of the dip stick has a split in it where a job a jubilee clip has been rubbing it, it has nearly split in two so going to replace that tomorrow see what happens

I recommend doing n112, n249 and pcv delete with a catch can install. This will remove all potential air leaks and overall creates a much more responsive car (you'd be surprised!)

Also in regards to the throttle body, you won't need a replacement gasket if you're careful, and Euro car parts sells carb cleaner for £2.50, if you've got one close. I think they also do the tb gasket too, don't quote me on that though.

Edit -

This has just about every problem noted, a search on there usually brings up a guide on how to solve it.

There was A 't' shaped pipe below the inlet manifold which had split, changed that and she's running beautiful, thanks for the help guy's

Glad you got it sorted.  Well done!

Any chance you could mark the thread as solved so people can see at a glance that you had success?
