My son, a new and happy Fabia owner, has connected his i phone 6 to the car via a USB cable and, when to connected to Apple Maps, the volume is way too loud and there doesn't seem to be any means of adjusting the volume

 

For example the volume button on the radio doesn't change the volume even on mute.

 

Appreciate any suggestions to rectify the problem please

I had a similar problem with mine. I solved it by turning the volume down the normal way , but only works when the sat nav is actually speaking.

Yep you have to turn down the volume when it speaks

You could try adjusting the volume on the handset when it's plugged in also. It remembers different volumes depending whether it's plugged into something or not.

Typed on a phone

You need to go into sound > volume > voice control. You can chose any level from pin drop quiet to shouty shouty!! You can also turn sound off completely so the volume doesn't drop on whatever you are listening to. Press the sound symbol on the touch screen at top of the map when your route is showing. Useful when I only want the map showing to show me the travel hot spots on my commute.
