Overpriced?

Featured Replies

I'm looking at a 02 plated 4x4 1.8T Estate at a main dealer. The car has 40 odd thousand miles on it and a few extras. The car has had 3 previous owners and the dealer want around 8K for it.

This seems like a lot to me, any input on what sort of price I should be looking to pay? I thought 7K is a bit more like it considering I could get one at a car supermarket for the 5.5-6K mark. I don't regard dealer warranty as worth 2.5K!

The 4x4 is quiet a rare car, hence worth more than the normal estate. The number of owners seems ok to me, not over the top and the mileage if its an early 02 car is below average, moving to average for a later 02 car.

Your 8K will get you the same engine as in the vRS, so can be remapped to the same figures in the future, even though the standard 4x4 is initially 150BHP.

You always pay more at a main dealer, and the dealer warranty is faultless having claimed several times in the past. You also seem to get better treatment if you buy the car from a main dealer rather than supermarket.

Thanks for that but I can't help thinking that 8K is well over the top considering similar models at other main dealers for at least £500 less. The problem is that the 4x4 is so rare none of the normal price guides are accurate enough IMHO. For example Parkers has the car valued at 7300 at a main dealer.

It's a shame because I'm pretty keen on the 4x4 apart from the lack of decent sounds and xenons.

for your info I bought a 4x4 1.8t hatch a couple of weeks back for £6700 privately, had a jabba remap and a tracker

I bought a 51 vRS hatch for 7k in November with 64k on the clock. I'd add £500 for newer+less miles, and it's also an estate, so £8k is about right. Dealer warranty is kickass, it's a pretty good deal.

52 plate 4x4 1.8T Elegance hatch, 19,000 miles, exceptionally well looked after with FSSH. Paid 6k for it with a 6 month Gold warranty (covers turbo unit, engine etc and smaller items such as MAF...). Think I got a great buy but that gives you another example. :)

As I thought Paul, 8K is well over the top. I'd have thought 7K would be a good price assuming as you say that it's in A1 condition.

Edited to add: considering a 2004 4x4 is available for just 10K at a main dealer it puts 8K for a 4yr old car into perspective.
