Who has DIY fitted a towbar to VRs Estate

Featured Replies

Pretty sure I have trolled through all the forums and somebody on here has DIY fitted a removable towbar with bypass relay , Looking for advice , I only want to tow a very small trailer for camping and runs to the dump so not bothered about parking sensors alarms etc  . If you know who it was or you have done it could you please advise  or post pics .. I can get a westfalia with electrics for under 200 quid , good mate is a bodyshop man for Audi so bumper removal covered and I am electrical Engineer so electrics should be a doddle

I've fitted a Westfalia demountable to my Octy hatch, not an estate, but from what I recall of the universal instructions the estate is not

significantly different. The Westfalia instructions are fairly clear. Bumper removal is straightforward, only the upper-most fixing at the topof the wheel-arch is a bit fiddly to get at. Once all fixings are undone pull the bumper sides outwards to disengage the clips, then slide it backwards and slightly downwards to remove. Don't panic if at first you can't see any holes for the mounting bolts in the chassis rails - Skoda tapes them up and underseals over the tape, a bit of prodding soon finds them. There are cutting marks on the inside of the bumper for the cut-out for the hitch so no measuring is required.

I've fitted tow-bars to a variety of cars over the years and the Octy has been the easiest by far.

Can't help you with the electrics, - I just use a manual control on a wander-lead that I made years ago, avoids all the faffing about and expense of relays and dedicated electrics.

Was thinking of using the 12v auxiliary power supply in boot to power the Bypass relay then tapping off the indicators brakes etc from a light cluster , that way I could completely disconnect electrics when not in use

Ordered a westfalia detachable tow bar today , spent a few hours tonight removing the necessary panels to access the loom at the rear . Found both sides pretty quickly . will post up some pics during installation , hopefully it will be helpful to anybody interested.
