Recon turbo fitted slight whistle

Featured Replies

Hi there

Perhaps someone can tell me if this is normal I own a 2.0 PD 140Bhp Octy on a 2005 plate the engine has now covered 140K my sticky vane turbo was replaced with a reconditioned one by my mates mechanic I paid £450 for this luxury. Now as soon as I picked up the car I have noticed a very slight whistle especially in second and third around 1000 to 2000 revs. The higher the revs the whistling disappears also the same when the engine warms up, not sure if this is a normal condition when replacing the turbo. I have asked my mates mechanic he said he went for a drive and everything is ok. He also told me not too go too crazy to start with.

Hope someone can explain it in a bit more detail here or em I going crazy here.

Thanks in advance.

It may just be the normal spool-up whistle that's more apparent now that the coked up turbo has been replaced with a properly functioning item.

If it boosts OK and engine pulls strongly I wouldn't worry.

It's also possible with a car that age that any disturbed pipework has split or clips have broken and you're hearing a boost leak... however that would probably be more of a hissing sound rather than a whistle.

Really appreciate your comment I think I'm too worried that something is wrong with it the car pulls much better now and improved response at the same time. Fuel consumption seems to better too not sure if that can be true.

DIY with filler and touch up paint.

Usually a recon turbo is sandblasted and work done

This whistle usually disappears after 2000kms
