Mk1 vRS upgrades

Featured Replies

so i am looking at a couple of things and a bit of advice from the masses

1st - is there a 6 speed box that works with the mk1 vRS?

2nd - a good performance air filter as a starting point for upgrade. seen loads with their own pro's and con's. was looking at a BMC CDA induction kit - is it any good?

thanks

The MK1 Rs is definitely one of the easiest cars to play with because of their 1.8 20vt engine. They have been with us for many years, with lot's of modifications done... Stg1, Stg2, Stg3 e.t.c. . First of all it's up to you how much money you want to spend and what is the bhp target. The 5spd gearbox is not the best option for heavily modified engines but it can work quite well with a decent amount of bhp. The only 6spd gear box that can go easily is from the Leon's 1.8T but you have to install everything DMF,clutch, gear selector, starter, e.t.c. .... Any performance filter will work better than the standard one so there is no limit to what filter you can use. I personally prefer the Pipercross C0177 for standard mafcase and the C0187 for S3 maf case.

Although as a slight aside, any mods you are making, make sure that they are "bolt on" and that you keep the original parts, especially as you have a wrc variant. These will go up in value more than the standard vRS due to the provenance, standard spec and the fact that there were only 100 made (I know it's essentially a vRS under the skin, but still worth keeping as standard as possible - or at least making everything reversible)

There are lots of things you can do ranging from free to £5k+. First thing I did was LPG

Air filter a waste of time really.  Save up for a remap and rear anti roll bar.  Essentials really.

Thanks for all the info. I'll get to researching

For me the WRC is nothing special, at least not more special then the normal vRS. If it had differences like some of the special Megane RS's do, like an expensive Bilstein suspension, bigger brakes and clever differentials I would probably reconsider. But for now it is just a "GT" limousine with stickers you like or you don't...

I doubt the general market for mk1 VRS models will go up (save for inflation and scrap values affecting prices). WRCs will always be worth a bit more to the right person but I think most people who want something rare that might go up in value would go for something a bit more interesting. Agree about keeping it standard (or carefully chosen OEM+) though.
