VAG Timing belt tensioners

Featured Replies

Not sure if its commonly known, but over the past month or two theres been a manufacturing fault in some timing belt tensioners supplied at the dealers. They lose tension as soon as you turn the engine over.

Working on a 2.0tdi today and the VW supplied tensioner done it to me as i turned the enginw over by hand. Worth keeping a close eye on if youre planning on using one soon.

Had the timing belt changed on my CFFB 2.0 CR140 Superb just last week.

Done 1,000 miles in it since though...

I may need mine done, is it just the ones from the dealership or all makes?

Its something that would be apparent straight away, as the very first turn of the crank causes it to spring free. And its ones from the VW garage. Its only a small percentage of them, but the dealer i used (Camerons of Perth) say its something theyve been made aware of. They sent a replacement out and it worked perfectly.

Hopefully mine goes ok, saying that if it did go then it would still be sorted

I imagine itll be perfectly fine. Every mechanic doing a timebelt knows to turn over the engine by hand before starting it up, and its during that process it springs free so its not really something which should be a massive problem outwith having to wait on a new one being delivered.
