CV Joint - easy DIY change?

Featured Replies

How easy is it to replace the CV joints on the Octavia? What parts would I require to do this?

about an hour.

a cv joint/boot kit from dealer.

Is it worth doing all at once?

depends... one is more prone thasn the other... nearside i think... so if offside has gone do both...

Its the nearside that has gone.

I know on a Fabia, just a CV boot change was a pain in the ar5e. From memory of observing went something like

wheel off

braking system off hub

hub nut undone

Driveshaft hammered out of outer hub

Remove knackered boot

get new boot, pack with grease supplied, refit

Reverse all other steps above. :)

And what was so tricky about all that then?

Not "tricky" - just seems quite a lot of work to change a £5 rubber boot and some grease. :D Another job which is more labour intensive than the value of parts being renewed might suggest. ;)

I believe the total cost is going to be about £72 for the parts I need.

:( Then the labour is wholly worth it. :D For me it was just a split boot and grease splattering all over my nearside alloy wheel. :grumpy: Took me ages to clean it thoroughly.

£72 parts + £60+ labour - think I may take a look at a Golf Haynes manual ;)

I had to do one on the gfs felicia (after replacing the front shocks and they were rusted in something bad!). So I bought a split one and used that...

I must say I am a little worried that corrosion wil hamper my progress

On the Felicia it took me about 5 days of hard work to remove the clamp bolt on the hub assembley on the offside. Hacksaws, hammers, tungsten drill bits, heat gun & swearing. Fortuantely I had done the nearside first and that only took about a day! Then waited about 3 weeks for Skoda to supply the parts!

I think it's one of the jobs I'd let someone else do.... 60 quid for labour sounds a good deal to me.

Oh but where is the excitment in that ? ;)

It's a time consuming crappy job because everything gets seized up and it takes ages to free it if you are unlucky. Once you start it there's no going back. I've done it myself a few years back but can't afford to be without my motor for a couple of days if I get stuck anymore.

Don't forget a new hub nut as well!!

I'll do them all day long for £80 + VAT fitted, parts supplied. It will take about 1.5hrs. It much quicker when you have the proper tools.

Alex.

Sorry, I was directing that toward Alex, who I invited along in my car a little while back. Not had the A.Ok yet though. :)

Not saying you were deliberately NOT invited ever though. :D

Apparently some people are car sharing - I believe Walkie is riding in Tom and Lorna

Ever heard of the PM facility, Jason, or email, or the phone?

:iagree: Damn threadjacker :finger: :thumbdwn:

Meanwhile, back at the ranch........

From what you're said Alex it seems I may be better off letting someone else do them for me. My car is to be at JBS for new ARB's etc in amonth or so but I dont know if it'll last that long.

I total failure will result in a complete loss of drive ?

 And a lot of rather nasty graunchy noises. But I'd say it's unlikely to fail totally if you drive it gently for a while. How noisy is it now?
