Numberplates and the Net

Featured Replies

Just a quick question really...

Is it illegal to post up, say, a picture of a car showing the Reg Plate without permission from the owner of the car?

Aside from copyright etc. (if you take the photo thats pretty much ok anyway) is it any kind of offence to 'publish' that information on the Web?

Is it still possible to get addresses from plates?

I think it only fair to block the reg number using a paint program - just in case!!

I get this, but was wondering if it's any kind of offence not to. I mean in real life you can see anyone's reg plate. So it's not like it's not public information. So would publishing it without permission be against any law (especially as Colin said, you may be able to get an address from it)

Don't think it is illegal to publish without consent, we ask you not to publish that of members cars, aminly for tracking and warranty issues. People sell cars or mis type a plate could end up leaving mr J.Fakename who is 80 been refused warranty work for his GT28 conversion.

I was asking if addresses could be gained over the net or other agencies, I know you used to be able to, which could lead to other issues...but your right, you see a gallardo, write it's plate down, is the same difference.

It depends on the context of the picture. A picture of a reg plate with the caption "If you see this *********** then please key his car as he cut me up on the motorway" is not likely to stay up for long and may potentially be liabelous (sp?).

Another issue is cloning and it's been an issue on other forums. For instance an Octavia vRS owner who doesn't want to pay the congestion charge fee could stand around waiting to see a suitable car on the road or just find a suitable club on the internet and look in the gallery section. That way it's also less likely for the two cars to be in the same area at the same time and arouse suspicions.
