I'm leaving my car with the mechanic tomorrow for him to try and reach the bonnet latch from behind the radiator (underside) to release it. He has had to do this on a golf where the cable separated before, but not an Octavia. I tried the web, but couldn't turn up a picture showing the release mechanism/ cable.

 

Can someone please take a couple of minutes, pop your hood and take a couple of photos to upload. I want to get these to the mech so as he has an idea of what and where he should be concentrating his efforts.
