Hi I've just recently become the proud owner of a 2001 (y) Skoda Fabia estate 1.4 mpi in bronze,it's done 65000 miles and is in very nice condition,we've only had the car 3 weeks and we've had people commenting on the condition of it already even a guy in a jaguar commented on it at our local garage, the service book is well stamped up but was due a service when we took it on so I've done that and cleared the prompt on the dash, the low coolant level light is on but I've already read about that on here may sort that or just live with it for now, also the speakers work intermitantly which is a little annoying as I do like listening to the radio, this is something I definitely want to sort out other than these two minor faults the car is very nice it drives very well and the interior is in excellent condition cheers Paul

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum.  Hope you get those issues sorted.  I'm sure you'll find help in the Fabia section.

Hi Paul.

Coolant level light can be the expansion tank, wiring nearby, or solder joints at the cluster connector. Worth fixing so you get a warning you don't ignore if you really do have a serious coolant loss incident in the future.

Intermittent speakers might be the solder joints of the speaker connector at the back of the stereo. See whether the pins (individually)  waggle a bit, from the outside (they shouldn't).  Getting to them to re-solder isn't straightforward, but is possible. I did one for a workmate last year.

Hi wino many thanks for the advice,is there a special tool for pulling the head unit out as the normal head unit removal tool I've got is no use for this one as it just has a small narrow hole either side of the facia,I'm going to look and see if the prongs in the coolant bottle are corroded at all cheers Paul

I seem to remember that a junior hacksaw blade, snapped in half, can be made to work as a removal tool.

Sensing prongs in the exp tank are only visible if you cut the tank apart, I believe.

Hi wino many thanks for the advice I've just come back in from playing with the head unit I did what you suggested and snapped a hacksaw blade in half I put my fingers in the cassette aperture hey presto head unit came out straight away and had a wiggle around and it turned out the speaker connector wasn't staying fully plugged in I put some tape around the connector then plugged it back in and waahay we have sound from both speakers chuffed to bits with that fix,I will try and get a replacement coolant tank, hopefully it's that and not dried solder on the dashboard as I definitely don't want to attempt to tackle that, cheers Paul
