Terrible high pitched screech noise from media unit on start up

Featured Replies

Has anyone else experienced a very high pitched screech form the media unit. On start up, it happens but can be stopped by turning the unit off. However, trying to make a phone call (phone linked to unit) will also start the noise. Only way to stop it then is to stop the car and turn off ignition and take out key!!! Luckily we were only just moving away. But only happened once so far. Having called local Skoda dealer to say I would be bringing car along (Tow bar fitted previous day!!) it now doesn't happen..... typical. Car is L+K 4x4. Is this an early sign of media unit failure??

Cheers

Mike

Greetings,

Do you have any CD's in the unit? and if so are any of them the first time you've put it/them in the unit? or is one of them a homemade cd with a paper label on (home burned cd's with paper labels on have crippled many a car cd player - my previous Honda and my mates Lexus to name but two - as the "thickness" is comparatively much more than a commercial cd and they seem to occasionally get stuck and not change or eject without dismantling the unit)

If the answer to all is NO then I'm sorry but I've exhausted my ideas. Hope you sort it soon.

Andy,

Thanks. No, no CD. Nothing changed from one journey when everything was fine to the next, when we got the noise. Since the noise also happened when the media unit was turned off, but I was making a call, I suspect it was something to do with the bluetooth phone signal setting off feedback in the speaker system, even though the carrier frequencies are different. I have in-car video/audio cam recording journeys, so next time I will be able to send video of the issue to my local Skoda dealership - they were very helpful and offered to look at the car straight away, but I said better to wait until it happens again. Hopefully it won't.

Cheers

Mike

When you turn the unit off, it isn't really off as such. You can still hear it working away to itself when the screen is off. There is a way to make the Columbus do a hard reboot which involves three of the smaller buttons above the media slot.

There are a few moving parts on the Columbus, obviously there's the optical drive but there's also the hard disk and cooling fan that have the potential to make a racket.

I did get this before a few times and the only conclusion I came to was a Bluetooth issue as it happened when I was either making or ending a call.  I did a reset on the Bluetooth module itself (under located under the driver's seat) and this seemed to solve it.  A bit of a mystery though but never happened since.  Might be worth a try.....
