hi have just been having a wee shufty on cupra.net and was just browsing through the threads when i came across one for a short shifter, which everybody recommended and said that they really improve the gear change!! Was wondering if anybody has one fitted on a Octy RS and whats the verdict? Would it improve a sloppy and loose gear change like mine?

I was looking at the short shifter myself a few months back for the octy vrs, suppose to give a 25% improvement over the standard gear change,that should really tighten things up because IMHO the octys gear change is not that bad,i did have a short shift on my pugeot 205 GTi, and i have to say it was exellent.

you should drive mine then!!! the gear change is shocking:( from 3rd to 2nd you really have to give it a right good pull to get it into gear!!! have taken it to the garage several times and just been told theres nothing they can do!!!:( which is really pants when i drive it home on the countries best driving road A832 inverness to ullapool (according to top gear)

You definitely have a problem there,from 3rd to 2nd should only require light pressure,maybe try another garage,is your clutch ok?.

its a brand new clutch aswell!!! the garage put some synthetic oil in the gearbox but that made no difference at all....have driven a few octy RS's over here and they all seem like new cars compared to mine!!! have had probs with it from day one!!!

Sounds like a gearbox fault,im no expert on gearbox's but to hazzard a guess it might be a syncromesh problem,is the problem only with 2nd and 3rd ?

well its always seemed slack.When i first took it for a test drive i noticed it and asked them to fix it.was ok for about two weeks then it started again.the garage just kept telling me there was nothing they could do!!! After about four months getting from 3rd to 2nd was a real problem,complained again and they changed the oil for synthetic,was ok again for a few weeks but then back to normal!! now i just avoid going from 3rd to 2nd!! am sick of taking it to the garage and nothing happening!!!:(

Sounds like this garage is avoiding the real problem,changing the g/box oil is not going to fix a mechanical fault.
