Clutch issues

Featured Replies

Hello,

This is a very ignorant question. My boyfriend was driving my 2004 skoda fabia on a motorway for some time. When leaving the motorway it became difficult to start from 1st gear. It sounded like it was going to stall, as if you were not giving it enough revs. It did not stall.

I took over the driving and realised the clutch was completely mucked, it had much less resistance when pushing against it and a much less obvious bite.

2nd and higher gears seem fine.

I imagine my clutch is broken but I was wondering if anyone had any idea HOW broken it is and the rough cost for the job? My fabia is getting on, and even though it's only 63000 miles it's having much more problems and I don't want to pump too much more money into it over buying a new one.

It was also only serviced and MOT'ed 10 days ago. Should this have been picked up or is it just one of those things?

I'Lloyd appreciate any responses, I'm really ignorant about cars.

Many thanks!

Just one of those things I'm afraid, unless the clutch was slipping badly or the car was not engaging gears properly at the time of the service the garage won't have had any idea on clutch condition. And it's not checked on a MOT as that just checks for road worthiness of a car.

Does it seem to be revving higher than usual in normal driving?

Is it awkward to get into first and reverse, but ok (at least with a little rev matching) into second and above?

Exact same problem from mine this morning. Trying to pull away in first, lots of juddering and grinding noises...

Was like it for 5 sets of lights, but then it cleared up. I suspect whatever bit of clutch lining was loose has now fallen off!

I reckon mine is effectively scrap though at 211,000 miles and 13 years old

:(
