Seems a lot of Nav's have developed an issue with rotten chassis rails.

That's somewhat terrifying. 

 

There was a thing a few years ago where it was happening to some landrover defenders with cherry pickers on, but they blamed operators putting the feet down on the back before the front stressing the chassis. 

A work colleague at the farm I used to work on had one that did that... while towing a trailer full of heifers. Apparently it was only held together by the leaf springs and drive shaft. He had it welded back together and I don't think he has it any more. This was after I left but before my dad left, about this time last year.

Yeah, mate's got one on a 2010 60 plate. Apparently Nissan are trying to deny the problem exists and are keeping it quiet.

He's already had an inspection camera down the chassis rail and there's evidence of rust inside. They seem to be rusting from the inside out so not evident  from an external visual check.

Many have even passed MoT's/ TuV tests etc only to collapse.

Funny you mention leaf springs as my mates Nav's springs aren't bowed anymore, just flat and he doesn't tow and only carries his equine dental kit n the back.

Suppose there's two choices there, either try to fight a brick wall or inject a load of rust convertor and cavity wax down there.

Just been watching this video and he's got rust and cracks on the outside:

 

Ouchy.

But, part of it could be down to a design not being implemented correctly at the factory.

ie a full penetration weld not being completed and only reaching a "fillet" weld state which would induce an uncatered for bending moment and cause a fatigue failure.

I spent 6weeks in uni doing the design and investigation on this happening which caused the failure of a gantry crane (killed the driver) whuch had been built under license from another company ( in a another country). A weld design wasnt acheivable onsite but noone noticed and it proved fatal..

Was in the process of going on my sisters. Had to have a fair bit of welding done which was just as well as the remains of the fuel tank strap disintegrated during removal. That and rust perforation all over is not great for an 11 year old vehicle.

Would have gone by now but she is waiting for the 3.0tdi amazon.

Mate of mine had a Pathfinder and had quite a few problems with rust when it was only a few years old. Not hugely surprised to read they rot badly.

Maybe that's why the engines used to fail at 40k, prevent them reaching the point of terminal chassis failure. Nissan are well aware of it, trouble is, they are getting out of having to pay for the majority of repairs by using the small print from the anti corrosion warranty ie if not inspected annually by Nissan approved centres - no warranty! From what I have read/heard, the chassis are backordered.
